With sophomore Lucky Radley, redshirt freshman Jarrell Oliver and highly touted junior college transfer Kelvin York in the fold, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is hoping that John White won’t have to shoulder as great a load as he did last season, Dirk Facer of Deseret News reported. On the first day with full pads, Oregon State offensive lineman Colin Kelly went down with a knee injury. Coach Mike Riley is optimistic Kelly will be back quickly. The Beavers are thin in the trenches and can ill afford a loss, Lindsay Schnell of the Oregonian reported along with other notes.

If you missed it last night, Washington coach Steve Sarkisian reported the sad news on his blog that oft-injured running back Deontae Cooper has torn the ACL in his right knee while participating in a non-contact drill during practice and will miss the entire season. Cooper had battled back from two previous ACL injuries in his left knee and was finally hoping to realize the immense potential he showed in high school.

On a defense rife with new faces, they’ll have to put those struggles behind them.

Oregon State transfer Ryan Katz appears to be the front-runner to start at quarterback for San Diego State when the Aztecs open their season at Washington, Tod Leonard of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Colorado cornerback Greg Henderson won't turn 20 until after the season, but the Buffaloes are already counting on him to be a leader this season. That's how young the Buffaloes are in the secondary, Brian Howell of buffzone.com reported.

Arizona got a commitment from a four-star running back, Anthony Gimino of the Tucson Citizen reported. Pierre Cormier becomes one of the highest-rated members of coach Rich Rodriguez’s first full recruiting class, which is up to 24 players.
