Pac-12 Notebook: Manic Monday sets in; Utah's Jordan Wynn calls it a career

Utah QB Jordan Wynn retires; Oregon loses John Boyett, Carson York for season.

Mondays are supposed to be one of the light days for college football teams. Sunday is a day of rest and recuperation, Monday is a day for relaxation and recharging and Tuesday begins the week of preparation in earnest.

Not this week. Not in the Pac-12. Here's a look around the conference:

Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn decided to call it a career after suffering yet another shoulder injury, his fourth, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Monday. Wynn's retirement leaves the Utes with either Jon Hays or Travis Wilson at quarterback, but the starter has not been decided. Wynn will stay on with the Utes in some sort of player-assistant coach role mentoring the quarterbacks, and he is expected to undergo another shoulder surgery. "He fought the good fight but enough is enough," Whittingham told reporters.

Utah may have suffered one big loss, but Oregon was dealt two bad hands. A day after senior all-conference safety John Boyett announced that he would have surgery to repair torn patellar tendons in both knees, senior guard Carson York announced that he would be out for the season following knee surgery. The loss of not one but two incredibly valuable senior starters leaves the Ducks replacing the only two starters from the team's 2010 national runner-up squad. "It impacts us more as a family," running back Kenjon Barner told Aaron Fentress of the Oregonian. "But as a team, you have to keep going. One guy goes down, the next guy has to be ready to step in and fill that void."

Washington junior offensive tackle Erik Kohler is out indefinitely with a damaged knee, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reported. The Huskies' offensive line had fits with a dangerous LSU defense, which helped lead the way in a 41-3 Tigers' win. Kohler plays a valuable backup role and filled in for Ben Riva, who suffered a broken arm in the team's season-opener.

If a tree falls in the woods, does anybody hear it? Likewise, if a player breaks his school's rushing record in three mostly-forgettable seasons, does anybody hear it? Well, UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin is finally making some noise in his senior year as he closes in on the Bruins' career rushing record. Franklin won his second straight Pac-12 offensive player of the week award after another 200-yard rushing performance in the team's surprise 36-30 win over Nebraska. He leads the nation in rushing at 215.5 yards per game, as Miguel Melendez of the Los Angeles Daily News noted, and is less than 700 yards away from Gaston Green's career record. Oregon State linebacker DJ Welch was awarded Pac-12 defensive player of the week honors, while Arizona kicker John Bonano took home the special teams award.
