While original reports of North Carolina hiring Gene Chizik as its defensive coordinator first surfaced nearly three weeks ago, the school finally made things official on Monday. Gene Chizik is now a Tar Heel.

“I’m thrilled to join Coach Fedora’s staff and I appreciate the trust he and athletic director Bubba Cunningham have in me,” said Chizik. “It is a tremendous opportunity to coach at one of the most prestigious Universities in the country and live in Chapel Hill. I’m committed to the student-athlete experience they expect at Carolina, and look forward to developing our players into the best they can be in all areas of their lives.”

Chizik, of course, is the former coach at Auburn; he (well, Cam Newton) led the Tigers to a national title in 2010. Chizik was fired following the 2012 season and hasn't coached since, spending last season as an analyst for SEC Network.

He does have 10 years worth of experience as a defensive coordinator, though, which will come in handy as he tries to turn around a North Carolina unit that was one of the worst in the country last season.
