"This afternoon, I talked to my staff and players and notified them that I have decided to resign as SMU head football coach effective immediately,” Jones said in a statement. “It was a very difficult decision for me to make, as you can imagine. I have devoted my life for the last 50 years to playing and coaching this game and it has been a great journey. This job has a lot of demands, as you know, and along with that journey comes a price that is paid. I have some personal issues I have been dealing with and I need to take a step away so I can address them at this time."

According to the school, defensive coordinator Tom Mason will serve as interim head coach and quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison will join wide receivers coach Jason Phillips to serve as co-offensive coordinators for the rest of 2014.

SMU started the season 0-2 after getting shut out by Baylor and losing 43-6 to North Texas. The Mustangs are off this week, returning to action Sept. 20 against Texas A&M for the team's home opener. Jones leaves SMU with a 36-43 record, including a 5-7 finish in 2013.

Jones arrived in Dallas after a successful run with Hawaii that ended in a Sugar Bowl appearance against Georgia. His prolific offenses helped lead the Warriors to two Top 25 finishes and produced one Heisman finalist in quarterback Colt Brennan. With a 76-41 record, Jones is the winningest coach in Hawaii football history.
