College football scores, rankings, highlights: Rivalry upsets litter Week 13, shaping final playoff push

The final Saturday of college football's regular season brought a shakeup for the sport as rivalry contests around the country provided upsets and outcomes that impacted not only conference title races, but the College Football Playoff picture. No. 3 Michigan emerged as arguably the day's biggest winner with a 45-23 road win over arch rival No. 2 Ohio State, but that was just one of the impactful results from a memorable day.

No. 8 Clemson suffered a shocking loss as the Tigers fell 31-30 to South Carolina, bowing out of the College Football Playoff conversation while suffering its first home loss since 2016. Much like Clemson, No. 5 LSU was already locked in to its conference championship game next week; however, the Tigers couldn't stay alive in the CFP picture, either, falling 38-23 to Texas A&M.

Those were the contests with obvious CFP implications, but other games resonated nationally as well.No. 12 Kansas State locked up its place in the Big 12 Championship Game next week by beating Kansas 47-27, and Purdue reached the Big Ten Championship Game with a 30-16 win at Indiana.

It was a wild day of rivalry action, and CBS Sports was here for it all with highlights articles and analysis. Check out the day's coverage below as college football's regular season came to a close.

Texas A&M pulls off stunning rout of LSU

Final: Texas A&M 38, No. 5 LSU 23

No. 5 LSU fell to Texas A&M 38-23 on Saturday night in one of the most shocking results of Rivalry Week. The defeat in College Station, Texas, marked the Tigers' third of the season, ruining any chances they had of making the College Football Playoff despite entering the game as the first team out of the four-team field.

The Aggies owned this contest from the outset. Star running back Devon Achane scored from 10 yards out to cap a 10-play, 90-yard drive midway through the first quarter that gave Texas A&M a lead it never relinquished. Achane rushed for 211 yards and scored two touchdowns in an incredible effort that will likely be the junior's last game with the program.

LSU in deep trouble

Early 4Q: Texas A&M 31, LSU 14

LSU is in major jeopardy of losing to unranked Texas A&M and seeing any chance of reaching the College Football Playoff slip through its hands. The latest Aggies' touchdown came courtesy of a slick one-handed touchdown grab by receiver Moose Muhammad. To make matters worse, Jayden Daniels just got banged up and had to leave the game with an apparent leg injury.

Fun game in Manhattan

Halftime: Kansas State 30, Kansas 21

When Kansas State took a 21-7 lead in the first quarter, it looked like Kansas was on the verge of getting smacked in this rivalry game. However, the Jayhawks have shown a lot of resilience and clawed their way back into the game. That said, they must find a way to make life tougher for Kansas State quarterback Will Howard. He already has 213 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Jabari Small blows it open for Tennessee

Early 3Q: Tennessee 28, Vanderbilt 0

Tennessee has quickly built upon the 21-point lead it took into the locker room. The Vols' defense stopped the Commodores on fourth down at midfield, and then running back Jabari Small broke off a 52-yard touchdown run to open up a four-touchdown lead.

Fumble six helps Texas A&M re-take lead in College Station

Mid 3Q: Texas A&M 24, LSU 17

Just when it looked like LSU was starting to get some momentum against Texas A&M, Jayden Daniels puts the ball on the turf, and Demani Richardson picks it up and returns it for a touchdown. Kyle Field is rocking with the Aggies inching closer to a top-10 upset in the regular season finale.

Trojans and Fighting Irish in a close one

Half: No. 6 USC 17, No. 16 Notre Dame 7

The Fighting Irish clawed back in the second quarter as Drew Pyne found Michael Mayer for a 22-yard touchdown to cap off a 9-play, 80-yard drive. But USC quarterback Caleb Williams wasn't about to let the Irish enter the locker room with momentum. Williams scored from five yards out with 34 seconds to play in the quarter to make it a two-score game at the break. Williams has 146 yards passing at the break, and has a lot on the line from a team and personal perspective.

Caleb Williams with the magic

No. 6 USC leads No. 15 Notre Dame 10-0 in the second quarter, and Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams is a big reason why. The sophomore is in the thick of the Heisman Trophy race, and he just had a "Heisman moment" on third-and-20. This did not result in a first down. However, he did have a 58-yard punt on the next play.

Dee Williams extends Vols' lead with punt return TD

Mid 2Q: Tennessee 21, Vanderbilt 0

Not wanting the offense to have all the fun, Tennessee's special teams unit got into the action with a touchdown of its own. After forcing a punt by Vanderbilt, Vols return man Dee Williams returned it for 73 yards and a touchdown. Between some timely blocks and Williams' blazing speed, not many Commodores came close to bringing him down.

Devon Achane rushing all over LSU

Halftime: Texas A&M 17, LSU 10

The Aggies have been able to move the ball on the Tigers' defense. More specifically, running back Devon Achane has been able to move the ball on the Aggies' defense. Achane is already over 100 yards rushing for the game, and he has done an excellent job of taking pressure off freshman quarterback Conner Weigman. We'll see if LSU can find ways to slow him down in the second half.

USC leads Notre Dame

End Q1: No. 6 USC 10, No. 15 Notre Dame 0

The Trojans are in a great spot to earn a berth in the College Football Playoff with a win over a ranked Notre Dame team, and they are looking the part so far. Caleb Williams is 5 of 6 for 86 yards an an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tahj Washington on the night. The Trojans entered the day in need of some style points. But, by virtue of Ohio State getting run out of its own building by Michigan, the Trojans may jump over a one-loss non-division champion out of the Big Ten.

Tennessee jumps out to two-score lead in Nashville

End 1Q: Tennessee 14, Vanderbilt 0

After last week's debacle against South Carolina, there were a lot of questions about how Tennessee would respond against in-state rival Vanderbilt. So far, the Volunteers look back to normal, even without quarterback Hendon Hooker. Joe Milton has made a couple big plays in his place, including a deep strike to Jalin Hyatt on the first drive of the game.

Good start for Texas A&M

End 1Q: Texas A&M 7, LSU 0

The Aggies aren't playing for bowl eligibility, but they are still plenty motivated against their SEC West foe. On its first drive of the game, the much maligned Texas A&M offense went 90 yards in 15 plays to take a 7-0 lead over LSU. The Aggies couldn't have asked for a better start in this one, but the Tigers currently have a long drive of their own going as they hope to answer.

Oregon State completes epic comeback against Oregon

Final: Oregon State 38, Oregon 34

After falling behind by 17 points to start the fourth quarter, Oregon State stormed back, scoring 21 consecutive points for an incredible comeback win against its biggest rival. The Beavers ran the ball extremely well, and they earned the win, but the Ducks will have several plays they regret. Between a fumbled punt, getting stuffed on fourth down in its own territory, and a missed fourth-and-goal opportunity, Oregon watched a sure win slip through its hands.

Penn State finishes strong

Final: Penn State 35, Michigan State 16

Penn State let Michigan State back in it after jumping out to a 21-3 lead, but the Nittany Lions turn it on down the stretch with a pair of touchdowns in a span of 35 seconds with less than five minutes to play. Nice Senior Day performance for Sean Clifford, who finishes 19 of 24 with four TDs and 0 INTs. That's a 10-win regular season for Penn State.

Utah cruises

4Q: Utah 63, Colorado 14

With Oregon's loss to Oregon State, Utah's hopes of making the Pac-12 title game remain alive. With a Washington win over Washington State tonight, the Utes will play USC for the league title next week. Utes have taken care of business emphatically at Colorado today with 639 yards so far compared to just 184 for the Buffs. Impressive performance in a spot where sleepwalking would have been easy.

Alabama wins third straight Iron Bowl matchup

Final: Alabama 49, Auburn 27

The Crimson Tide just made it three in a row against the Tigers in a game that was never really in doubt. Auburn managed to put up a 60-minute fight, but Alabama was clearly the better team. Bryce Young had a brilliant afternoon in what may very well have been his last game in Bryant-Denny Stadium. He completed 20 of his 30 passes for 343 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while rushing for 48 yards and a score.

Michigan State rallying

4Q: Penn State 21, Michigan State 16

Michigan State trailed 21-3 late in the third quarter, but the Spartans have scored 13 unanswered to draw within five points. Impressive stuff from a Spartans squad that continues to play under-manned on defense because of the suspensions of several players from the tunnel melee at Michigan. Penn State's running game has struggled in the second half after leading the charge in the first half.

Oregon starting to collapse

Early 4Q: Oregon 34, Oregon State 31

Things have changed very quickly in Corvallis. After the Ducks kicked a field goal to go up by 17 in the fourth quarter, the Beavers answered with a touchdown drive that took all of 1:33 off the clock. On the ensuing Oregon possession, the Ducks went three-and-out before punter Alex Bales fumbled the snap and allowed Oregon State to take over at the one-yard line. Two plays later, the Beavers punched in a touchdown to cut Oregon's lead to three with plenty of time left.

Purdue reaches Big Ten title game

Final: Purdue 30, Indiana 16

It's official. Purdue is heading to the Big Ten Championship Game for the first time in program history. The Boilermakers needed Nebraska to upset Iowa yesterday, and they needed to beat Indiana today. Both happened, and the Boilermakers will head to Indianapolis to face Michigan after the Wolverines' beatdown of rival Ohio State today. Great day for Aidan O'Connell and Charlie Jones as the QB-WR duo helped Purdue rally from an early 7-3 deficit.

Oregon pulling away from Oregon State

Early 4Q: Oregon 34, Oregon State 17

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Oregon kicked a field goal to take a three-score lead over Oregon State. The Ducks have now created some breathing room in this top-25 rivalry clash. Since falling behind 10-7 in the first quarter, Oregon has outscored Oregon State, 27-7. If the Beavers are going to pull off the upset, they need to find answer quickly.

Auburn trying to make it interesting in Tuscaloosa

End 3Q: Alabama 42, Auburn 21

Early in the third quarter, Alabama took a 28-point lead, and it looked like the blowout was starting. However, Auburn found a way to get into the end zone, once again using the legs of quarterback Robby Ashford, who has rushed for 101 yards and two scores. Now, Auburn is driving with the chance to make this a two-score game early in the fourth quarter. That would give the Tigers a puncher's chance at pulling off the comeback.

Kentucky takes down Louisville

Final: Kentucky 26, Louisville 13

Kentucky has made it four straight wins over Louisville, and Mark Stoops has had a lot of success against his team's biggest rival. As usual, running back Chris Rodriguez was a workhorse for the Wildcats as he carried the ball 24 times for 120 yards. With Malik Cunningham banged up, Louisville struggled to get much going against Kentucky, especially in the passing game. Three turnovers really sank any chance the Cards had to win this one.

TCU in command

Start 3Q: TCU 34, Iowa State 7

Iowa State has been surprisingly non-competitive here because of a pic-six and some shoddy defense/special teams play. Expect a heavy dose of Kendre Miller and Emari Demercado in the second half as the Horned Frogs cruise in to next week's Big 12 title game. Will be a perfect 12-0 entering the game so long as they avoid some sort of catastrophic collapse here.

Nittany Lions up

Half: Penn State 14, Michigan State 3

Penn State is closing in on a 10-win regular season as it leads Michigan State at halftime. The Nittany Lions got 75 yards from Nick Singleton and 50 from Kaytron Allen in the first half while averaging 5.3 yards per rush. Different story for the Spartans, who netted 8 yards rushing in the half. A 51-yard field goal got the Spartans on the board at the end of the half, but Penn State gets the football to start the third quarter.

Crimson Tide rolling against Auburn

Halftime: Alabama 35, Auburn 14

Auburn managed to hang around for much of the first half, but Alabama is in full control at this point. That is due in large part to the efforts of Bryce Young, who has already posted an absurd stat line. Young has thrown for 264 yards, rushed for 26 more, and he has totaled four touchdowns with 30 minutes of football left to play. The Auburn defense has had no answer for the defending Heisman Trophy winner.

Oregon jumps ahead before halftime

Halftime: Oregon 14, Oregon State 10

What a swing this game experienced at the end of the first half. Oregon State appeared to pick up a first down at Oregon's four-yard line on a fourth-and-one play, but officials ruled that the runner was short of the line to gain. They were unable to overturn that call via replay, and Oregon marched down the field on a 13-play, 95-yard touchdown drive to take the lead right before halftime. If the Beavers lose a close game, that call will be talked about for a while.

Utah dominating

2Q: Utah 21, Colorado 0

As expected, Utah is handling Colorado without much drama. Micah Bernard has 70 yards and a TD on the ground. Ja'Quinden Jackson has two scores on the ground. The biggest drama in Boulder today is going to be whether there turns out to be any legs to the reports of Deion Sanders being offered the coaching job. If he takes, it he needs to bring a good OC. Buffs have 0 yards and 0 first downs.

Horned Frogs cruising

Late 1Q: TCU 24, Iowa State 0

Long way to go, but TCU looks determined to avoid an upset as Kendre Miller goes 25 yards for a TD to make it 17-0. Then, on Iowa State's first play of the next possession, Millard Bradford intercepts Hunter Dekkers and runs it back for a TD. TCU hasn't allowed a first down yet and has scored on all three of its own possessions. Everyone keeps waiting for that moment when TCU crashes back down to Earth, but there's no indication that it's actually going to happen.

Louisville makes the switch to Malik Cunningham

Halftime: Kentucky 13, Louisville 7

Malik Cunningham has been battling an injury, and he didn't get a start in this game, but Louisville chose to put him in after falling behind 13-0. Cunningham was able to give the Cardinals a badly needed spark on offense, and he finished off a long drive with a six-yard touchdown run right before halftime. While Louisville fans have to be excited to see Cunningham back in action, it has been running back Jawhar Jordan who has been the star so far. He already has 94 yards rushing on the day.

Alabama takes control of Iron Bowl

Early 2Q: Alabama 21, Auburn 7

Robby Ashford and the Auburn offense came out and punched Alabama in the mouth when he scored on a 24-yard touchdown run, but the Crimson Tide have found their footing. Bryce Young has now led Alabama on three straight touchdown drives, one of which came following a critical Auburn fumble. The Crimson Tide are doing their best to create separation in this Iron Bowl.
