College football scores, rankings, highlights: Michigan, Oregon survive scares from underdog opponents

A pair of Big Ten juggernauts with lofty expectations survived scares in Week 1 as the first full Saturday of college football provided ample drama. Both No. 3 Oregon and No. 9 Michigan faced adversity in the fourth quarter as heavy favorites but managed late scores to avoid early-season disasters.

The Ducks barely escaped a valiant effort from FCS Idaho, winning 24-14 as more than a 40-point favorite. Oregon needed an offsides penalty from the Vandals late in the fourth quarter to help avoid a potential turnover on downs. Without the flag, the Vandals may have gotten the football back down just three. Though quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 41 of 49 passes for 380 yards in his Oregon debut, the Ducks turned the football over on downs twice in the third quarter to leave the door open for Idaho.

Michigan led by just six points in the fourth quarter against Fresno State before punching in a pair of late scores to beat the Bulldogs 30-10. The Wolverines offense went eight straight possessions without a touchdown before finally marching 75 yards for a needed score late in the fourth quarter. From there, star cornerback Will Johnson put the game away with an 86-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Both the Ducks and Wolverines will need to improve in a hurry ahead of challenging Week 2 games. Michigan hosts No. 4 Texas next week, while Oregon welcomes Mountain West power and playoff contender Boise State to town.

Kentucky-Southern Miss called off in third quarter

In one of Saturday's more unique results, Kentucky's season opener against Southern Miss was called off midway through the third quarter due to inclement weather in the area.

"By mutual agreement of the participating institutions as permitted by NCAA rules, tonight's game between Kentucky and Southern Mississippi has been terminated and is considered a complete game with a final score of 31-0 in favor of Kentucky," the SEC said in a statement. "All statistics in the game are considered final and complete."

The start of Saturday's game, which was scheduled to kick off at 7:45 p.m. ET, had already been delayed over two hours due to inclement weather. Still, the Wildcats are 1-0, even if it only took them just over 30 minutes to log their first victory of the season.

Oregon avoids major upset with flashy INT

Final: No. 3 Oregon 24, Idaho 14

Oregon just narrowly avoided a complete meltdown in its first contest as a Big Ten program, thanks to some last-second heroics from its defense. Idaho had two opportunities to cut into into Oregon's 10-point lead in the final five minutes of the first quarter.

The first ended when Idaho quarterback Jack Layne was sacked on third-and-19 by Oregon defensive lineman Derrick Harmon. The second was cut short by a phenomenal interception from defensive back Nikko Reed, who cut off his wide receiver and adjusted mid-air to snag an errant pass. The Ducks were able to bleed the clock and slam the door on Idaho's upset bid.

Michigan escapes

Final: Michigan 30, Fresno State 10

The final score does not indicate how close Michigan cut it against Fresno State. The Wolverines led just 16-10 in the fourth quarter after a 75-yard scoring drive from the Bulldogs made things dicey. The Wolverines struck back with their first touchdown since the game's opening series and then sealed it with an 86-yard Will Johnson interception return for a touchdown. With Texas coming to town next week, Michigan has some kinks to iron out, especially on the offensive side. Davis Warren started at quarterback and went 15 of 25 for 118 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Alex Orji played but attempted just two passes and was used primarily as a runner. The Wolverines finished with just 269 total yards.

Idaho trading blows with Oregon

Q4: No. 3 Oregon 17, Idaho 14

This game has reached full upset red-alert status. Idaho, which entered the game as a 44-point underdog, is going blow for blow with Oregon in the fourth quarter. Actually, the Vandals are outscoring the Ducks 14-3 in the second half and are employing some very creative play calling in the process.

Idaho scored its first touchdown on a double-reverse passing play and may have outdone itself for its second score. Quarterback Jack Layne lined up at running back and took a handoff from running back Elisha Thomas. Layne initially looked to pass, but instead took advantage of a wide open running lane and pranced into the end zone untouched. Pressure is fully on the Ducks now to avoid one of the most shocking upsets in college football history.

Fresno State within a score

4Q: Michigan 16, Fresno State 10

Fresno State just drove 75 yards on seven plays for its first touchdown of the game, as Mikey Keene found Raylen Sharpe for a 16-yard strike. The Bulldogs are within six points in the fourth quarter and will have some confidence after marching down the field against the Wolverines for the first time all night. Can the sputtering Wolverines offense answer the bell? Even a field goal would go a long way toward getting them out of Week 1 unscathed with a visit from Texas up next.

Idaho pulling out all the stops against Oregon

Q3: No. 3 Oregon 14, Idaho 7

Idaho got tricky to score its first touchdown against Oregon. The Vandals emptied their play-calling bag to pull out a double-reverse pass that allowed tight end Jake Cox to run wide open through Oregon's secondary and down the sideline for a 36-yard score. The best part for Idaho? That touchdown came right after it stuffed Oregon on fourth-and-inches.

To the fourth in Ann Arbor

End 3Q: Michigan 13, Fresno State 3

It's been a worrisome debut for the Michigan offense, but its defense remains a force to be reckoned with. Neither team has reached 200 yards, and they are a combined 3 of 17 on third downs. Alex Orji has made a couple plays with his legs, but Davis Warren continues to get most of the reps at quarterback for the Wolverines. He's 13 of 21 with 92 yards and an interception. What's perhaps most concerning, though, is that Michigan's running backs have largely been held in check by Fresno State's defensive front.

Oregon struggling against Idaho

Early 3Q: No. 3 Oregon 14, Idaho 0

Oregon probably wishes it was still able to play at least a few games on the Pac-12 Network, if only because a handful of people would have access to this game's broadcast. This has been a particularly ugly performance for the Ducks, who have started one of their most anticipated seasons in recent memory with a whimper.

It's not that Oregon has struggled to move the ball against Idaho. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has hit on 24 of his 28 pass attempts for 248 yards and one touchdown, and running back Jordan James is averaging 7.2 yards per carry. The Ducks just haven't been able to finish, and their offensive line is struggling. Gabriel has been sacked three times already. Oregon only allowed five sacks during the entire 2023 campaign. The offense has also accrued five penalties for 25 yards, including two false starts in the third quarter alone.

UNLV widens its edge

3Q: UNLV 24, Houston 0

Houston's offense continues to sputter in Willie Fritz's head coaching debut. The Cougars have just six first downs late in the third quarter and are now 0 for 9 on third downs. The Rebels beat Vanderbilt last season and were a 9-win team that played for the Mountain West title. They lost their quarterback to the portal, but coach Barry Odom has a squad. Impressive showing in a Big 12 venue.

Alabama off to scorching-hot start under DeBoer

Early 3Q: No. 5 Alabama 42, Western Kentucky 0

Kalen DeBoer's first game as Alabama coach is going quite well. The Crimson Tide have a 6-touchdown lead on Western Kentucky early in the third quarter, thanks to some stellar play from quarterback Jalen Milroe and a strong defensive effort. Milroe attempted just six passes in the first half, but completed four of them for 169 yards and three touchdowns. True freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams had touchdown receptions covering 84 and 55 yards.

Not to mention the performance that Alabama's running backs are turning in. Justice Haynes has four carries for 102 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown run, while Jam Miller has touched the ball five times for 64 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Alabama has two interceptions -- both from safety Keon Sabb -- five tackles for loss and one sack.

Michigan's offense sputtering

Half: Michigan 10, Fresno State 3

Michigan starting quarterback Davis Warren is 8 of 10 for 51 yards with no touchdowns and an interception in the first half. Fresno State doesn't have to respect the Wolverines' throwing game and is making life harden Michigan's running backs. In total, Fresno State has outgunned Michigan 97-89. The Wolverines' longest play from scrimmage in the first half was a 13-yard completion from Warren to Colston Loveland, and 11 of those yards came after the catch.

Jaxson Dart putting up video game numbers against Furman

Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart had 22 completions for 415 yards and five touchdowns... in the first half of the Rebels' season opener against Furman. He's the first SEC quarterback since Joe Burrow in 2019 to throw for at least 350 yards in a single half, as Ole Miss has a 52-0 lead going into halftime. As if that wasn't impressive enough, Dart has also rushed six times for 27 yards and another touchdown.

Eight different Ole Miss players have caught a pass so far. Tre Harris is leading the pack with eight receptions for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Caden Prieskorn, wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. and tight end Dae'Quan Wright have also hauled in touchdown passes.

Houston looking rough early

Half: UNLV 14, Houston 0

The Willie Fritz era is off to a rough start at Houston as the Cougars trail UNLV 14-0. The Cougars mustered only five first downs in the opening half and were 0 off 6 on third-down. UNLV has touchdown drives of 55 and 75 yards on the board as the Rebels look to make a statement by beginning Year 2 under Barry Odom with a road win over a Big 12 team. UNLV is averaging 6.7 yards per play. Vs. just 2.1 for Houston.

Michigan starts slow

2Q: Michigan 7, Fresno State 0

Michigan is off to a sluggish start against Fresno State as the Wolverines enter the post-Jim Harbaugh era. The reigning national champions opted to start Davis Warren at quarterback over Alex Orji, but both have played in the first half. However, the Wolverines have gone punt, interception, punt, punt since scoring a touchdown on their first possession. That score was set up by an interception and only required the Wolverines to march 31 yards. So while star running back Donovan Edwards is back, this revamped team has some questions to answer as he's been held to just five yards on four carries early.

South Carolina escapes devastating loss

Final: South Carolina 23, Old Dominion 19

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer can wipe a little bit of sweat off of his brow, at least. The Gamecocks, who entered Week 1 as 20.5-point favorites, barely escaped with a 4-point win against a very game Monarchs squad. South Carolina has defensive back Jalon Kilgore to thank after he intercepted a tipped Old Dominion pass with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter.

It wasn't a great debut overall for new Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers, at least from a passing perspective. He completed just 10 of his 23 pass attempts for 114 yards. He did rush for 68 yards and South Carolina's go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, and there's hope that he'll get better with more college snaps under his belt.

Coleman comes through for Auburn

Auburn is hoping that its passing attack takes a big leap this season, and the presence of five-star freshman Cam Coleman is a huge reason why. It didn't take long for Coleman, a top-5 overall prospect from the Tigers' 2024 signing class, to show why he generated so much hype this offseason. He flashed his deep play-making ability on a 44-yard touchdown catch, hitting an Alabama A&M defender with a nasty double move to create some space and break wide open on a fly route towards the end zone.

It was the first catch of the 6-foot-3 Coleman's collegiate career. As for the progress of Auburn's passing game, so far so good -- though the level of competition should be considered. Payton Thorne completed four of his first five passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams scores explosive touchdown in Alabama debut

It's a big day for five-star wide receivers from the 2024 high school recruiting class. Not to be outdone by Ohio State wideout Jeremiah Smith's spectacular debut against Akron, Crimson Tide freshman Ryan Williams just generated one of the longest touchdowns we've seen during the Week 1 window. Williams took off on a deep post route and made a nice move to race past a Western Kentucky defensive back in man coverage.

That gave Williams plenty of space down the field. Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe hit him in stride and Williams, who had a good 10 yards of space between him and the nearest defender, finished the play to score from 84 yards out.

Alabama star suffers injury in warmups

Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor, a 2023 SEC All-Freshman team member, suffered an apparent arm injury during warmups ahead of Saturday's season opener against Western Kentucky, according to 247Sports. He was replaced at left tackle by Elijah Pritchett, who went through warmups as the second-team right tackle, for Alabama's first drive of the game. Proctor was spotted on the sideline in street clothes and with his left arm in a sling.

South Carolina on the ropes against Old Dominion

Late 3Q: South Carolina 16, Old Dominion 16

It's not been an auspicious start South Carolina's fourth year under coach Shane Beamer. The Gamecocks entered their season opener against Old Dominion, which has two straight losing seasons under coach Ricky Rahne, as 20.5-point favorites. Through three quarters, though, the Monarchs are giving South Carolina a legitimate fight.

New Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers has been struggling in his first career start. Entering the fourth quarter, he has just seven completions on 18 attempts for 89 yards. He also fumbled away South Carolina's first drive of the second quarter. The Gamecocks haven't made it back to the red zone since Old Dominion fumbled the ball on its own 3-yard line to open the game.

The Deshaun Foster era begins for UCLA in The Aloha State

Foster will be making his debut as the head man of his alma mater when UCLA faces Hawai'i Saturday night on CBS. Foster was hired to replace Chip Kelly, after he fled to take the offensive coordinator job at Ohio State. The Big Ten swelled to unprecedented membership this summer with the additions of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington to become the largest conference in college athletics. The Bruins were tabbed to finish 15th — and last among all four Pac-12 newcomers — in the preseason Big Ten media poll due to the departure of multiple starters and a brand new coach leading the program. UCLA's bread and butter was its defensive line last season, and that group ranked near the top of the FBS in total sacks. That style of play and having a defensive-minded coach like Foster leading the program should fit in perfectly in the Big Ten.

Ashton Jeanty having a career day for Boise State

Late 3Q: Boise State 36, Georgia Southern 30

Have yourself a day, Mr. Jeanty! The Boise State star running back scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the day to help Boise State retake a lead late in the third quarter. The Broncos tabbed Maddux Madsen the starting quarterback over former five-star Malachi Nelson, and it won't matter who is playing quarterback if Jeanty is going to play like this. Jeanty has 174 yards on only 18 attempts.

The Kalen DeBoer era begins in Tuscaloosa

For the first time since the 2006 season, a different coach other than Nick Saban will be on the sidelines for Alabama during its Week 1 opener when they face Western Kentucky. After leading Washington to the CFP title game, the Crimson Tide tabbed DeBoer to replace one of the most iconic coaches in team sports. Former Alabama running back Damien Harris, who played for Saban from 2015-18, expressed confidence in the new leader of the program.

"I'm definitely excited to see him bring his winning culture to a place where the standard is winning," Harris said when asked about DeBoer. "He's been in other places, and everywhere he's been, he's won. I don't know that he had the same pressure to win, but I definitely think with his background, with his record of winning, that'll match the standard that is Alabama."

Graham Mertz out, DJ Lagway in for Florida

Florida starting quarterback Graham Mertz exited Saturday's Week 1 game against No. 19 Miami with an unspecified injury after taking a hard hit during the third quarter, forcing him to the locker room. That paved the way for freshman DJ Lagway to make his college debut on the next offensive possession for the Gators early in the fourth quarter with his team trailing 38-10.

At the time of the injury, Mertz had 91 yards passing with 11 completions on 20 attempts.

Lagway, the top-ranked quarterback and the No. 3 overall player in the 2024 recruiting cycle by 247Sports, entered this season as Mertz's backup. At 6-foot-3, 239 pounds, Lagway is a true dual-threat capable of offering a different look for Florida's offense and could see extended action depending on the severity of Mertz's injury.

Arch Manning enters for Texas

Arch Manning made his 2024 season debut for No. 4 Texas against Colorado State when he entered the Week 1 game in relief of star quarterback Quinn Ewers during the third quarter with the outcome well in hand, 38-0 in favor of the Longhorns.

Immediately, Manning showed off his arm talent with a 40-yard pass to Johntay Cook, followed by a nifty 5-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal -- his first in college -- to put the Longhorns up 44-0 on the Rams.

Penn State cruises by West Virginia

FINAL: No. 8 Penn State 34, West Virginia 12

Around this time last year, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar made his first career start against West Virginia in Happy Valley in a 38-15 win. Saturday marked more Déjà vu for the Mountaineers, as Allar once again had himself a day in a statement road win to open the season. Allar finished 11 of `17 for 216 yards and three touchdowns and added 44 yards rushing on the ground.

The start of the second half of this game was delayed for nearly two hours because of weather. Penn State outscored WVU 14-6 in the final 30 minutes of action while limiting West Virginia star quarterback to 161 yards passing. Penn State is looking to break through this season and reach the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. This was certainly a great place to start.

More positive: Penn State junior WR Harrison Wallace lll had the best game of his career, catching five passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns after coming into this game with only one career score.

Ohio trying to spoil Fran Brown's Syracuse debut

3Q: Syracuse 17, Ohio 16

Syracuse is getting all it can take from Ohio in the Orange's first game under new coach Fran Brown. The Bobcats, who trailed 17-9 at halftime thanks to a 17-point second quarter from Syracuse, just scored their first touchdown of the game to trim Syracuse's lead to one point with just over 11 minutes to go in third quarter.

Ohio running back Anthony Tyus III did the honors with a 13-yard rushing touchdown, breaking an ankle-tackle and tip-toeing down the sideline in the process. Tyus has 143 of Ohio's 170 yards rushing, as Syracuse's run defense has struggled to find its footing.

Drew Allar has been fantastic for Penn State

Late 4Q: No. 8 Penn State 34, West Virginia 12

Heading into Year 2 as the undisputed starter for Penn State, Allar has looked sharp on the road against West Virginia. The former five-star recruit has completed 11 of his 17 attempts for 217 yards and three touchdowns and has six carries for 44 yards. Allar threw a nasty stiff arm on third-and-short to keep the drive alive, and the Penn State defense followed up the ensuing drive by forcing a fumble. After a two-hour rain delay delayed the start of the second half, it appears the Nittany Lions are showing no signs of running out of gas. Allar made his first career start in Happy Valley last fall against this same West Virginia team.

Jeremiah Smith show in Columbus

Turns out the preseason hype for Ohio State freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was warranted. The No. 1 overall prospect in the 2024 class already has two touchdown catches for the Buckeyes. He's the first freshman with multiple receiving touchdowns in his Ohio State debut since Michael Wiley in 1996, who had two touchdown catches against Rice. Wiley went on to earn two separate All-Big Ten honors for the Buckeyes.

Looks like Smith should follow a similar path. He caught five of quarterback Will Howard's 10 completions in the first half and was responsible for 47 of the Buckeyes' 116 receiving yards.

Texas rolling against CSU

3Q: Texas 31, Colorado State 0

The Longhorns' passing game is not missing a beat in Quinn Ewers' third season as Texas takes a five-score lead early in the third quarter. Quinn Ewers has completed passes to 10 different receivers, but Isaiah Bond and Matthew Golden lead the way with eight catches for 111 yards and three touchdowns combined. Texas has held Colorado State to only 108 yards, including 2.8 yards per pass attempt with an interception.

Vanderbilt upsets Virginia Tech

FINAL: Vanderbilt 34, Virginia Tech 27 (OT)

Virginia Tech was projected as a potential sleeper contender in the ACC. Vanderbilt didn't care. The Commodores used a legendary effort from quarterback Diego Pavia to upset the Hokies in Nashville. Vanderbilt missed a 43-yard field goal as time expired in regulation and were forced to go to overtime, but Pavia either threw or ran for all 25 yards to the end zone to give Vandy a lead it would not relinquish. Virginia Tech starting QB Kyron Drones was hobbled by an injury, but backup Collin Schlee's fourth-down pass went out of the back of the end zone to end the game.

Pavia scored three touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards to go with his 190 through the air. Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns, but the Hokies were held to 2.5 yards per carry. Vanderbilt jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half, but Virginia Tech's comeback attempt fell short.
