College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, Week 7: Miami bounces back, Memphis wins wild shootout

Week 7 of the 2020 college football season is in the books -- the final week of the college football season before the Big Ten joins the party. It was another eventful week around the country, but once again we were reminded that there are two top dogs at the moment separating themselves above everyone else: No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama. Both earned noteworthy wins on Saturday as the Tigers offense scored at will in a victory over Georgia Tech while the Tide pulled away in the second half to take down No. 3 Georgia.

Elsewhere across the schedule -- speaking of Clemson -- No. 13 Miami bounced back from that humbling loss to the Tigers last week with a victory over ACC foe Pitt. The most exciting result of the day, however, may have come to us from two teams not currently ranked in the AP Top 25 as UCF and Memphis delivered us another AAC classic to remember.

There was a lot to cover with those games and everything in between. CBS Sports was here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the day.

FINAL: Florida State 31, North Carolina 28

It was nearly a heck of a comeback, but North Carolina couldn't quite overcome their poor first half against the Seminoles. North Carolina tried to erase a 31-7 halftime deficit, and nearly got there, but a trio of bad dropped passes at the end of the game allowed Florida State to hang on for the win. This is a statement win for first-year coach Mike Norvell as he tries to build this proud program back up. Florida State's offensive line played much better tonight than it has all year with FSU rushing for more than 200 yards. North Carolina, put simply, didn't execute as well as it needed to in order to win. Lots of questionable play calls, poor throws from Sam Howell and bad defense ended up costing North Carolina. And now coach Mack Brown is 0-for-10 against FSU.

FINAL: Virginia Tech 40, Boston College 14

Virginia Tech took Boston College's turnovers and ran with them. The Hokies, finally as close to full strength as they've been all year, looked impressive in a convincing win. The combination of Khalil Herbert and Hendon Hooker is quietly one of the best in the nation. The two combined for 307 yards rushing with Hooker adding rushing touchdowns. The Hokies look legit when that offense is humming along.

END 3Q: Alabama 34, Georgia 24

A fun, back and forth battle between the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs enters the final quarter. The takeaway from the third quarter action? It helps to have weapons and Alabama has a bunch of em. The 90-yard touchdown to Jaylen Waddle was but one example of Alabama's ability to hit the home run from any part of the field. Just when you think you have Alabama on the ropes -- boom, they get you over the top and suddenly they're ahead. Georgia has arguably the best defense in the country, but today's game is geared towards big plays in the passing game. The higher scoring this game goes, the more it probably favors the Tide. But, there's a lot of football left. The final quarter should be great.

END 3Q: Florida State 31, North Carolina 21

Well, well, well. The Tar Heels have risen from the grave and what was a 24-point Florida State lead is now just 10 as we head into the fourth quarter. Like most things for North Carolina tonight, the comeback hasn't been easy. Still, this offense has been chipping away at Florida State's lead while mixing in some big passing plays from quarterback Sam Howell. Florida State hasn't helped themselves, either. A long offensive drive to start the third quarter didn't result in any points and a massive interception to end the third quarter puts the Tar Heels in prime position to cut further into the lead as we head into the final 15 minutes. Buckle up.

End 3Q: Virginia Tech 27, Boston College 14

The Hokies are steadily pulling further away from the Eagles after three quarters. A large reason why is the turnover problem for Boston College. The Eagles have given the ball away four times, including three fumbles. That's resulted in 13 of Virginia Tech's 27 points. Hokies running back Khalil Herbert is also having a big game with 135 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback Hendon Hooker has three total touchdowns as well.

HALFTIME: Georgia 24, Alabama 20

Nick Saban's unblemished record against his former assistants is officially on the line. The Bulldogs have beat Alabama at their own game so far with plenty of offense as they take a four-point lead into the half. Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV has been a little erratic, but has 177 yards passing and a couple of touchdowns. The biggest threat to Alabama's defense has been Georgia's running backs coming out of the backfield in the passing game. Overall, it's pretty remarkable how lost some of the linebackers and defensive backs look in pass coverage. But this is still a four-point game and Alabama can score from any part of the field. Overall, this has been an evenly played game with Georgia performing slightly better on third downs (5-of-9).

HALFTIME: Florida State 31, North Carolina 7

No. 5 North Carolina came into Saturday's game against Florida State as two-touchdown favorites. After one half, the Tar Heels are going to need a couple more touchdowns just to stay close with the Seminoles. Florida State leads in stunning fashion 31-7 and the Tar Heels are trying to get over the shell shock.

The Seminoles got on the board early with a quick 23-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jordan Travis, who added another touchdown run in the second quarter to cap off a nine-play scoring drive. However, it's been the defense that has stood out through 30 minutes. The Noles got a key fourth-and-1 stop backed up into their own territory. They've also capitalized on a poor Sam Howell throw with a pick-six while showing signs of a capable pass rush. This is the best the defense has played in a while, if not all season. The offensive line, which is normally a liability, has played better, too. Florida State averaged more than five yards a carry in the first half and is getting legit push up front.

Keep in mind that North Carolina coach Mack Brown is 0-for-9 against FSU in his career. This has not been the Tar Heels' finest half of football. Florida State's touchdown drive at the end of the half stymied any momentum UNC had built off its own scoring drive. UNC has a lot of work to do at halftime to get back into this one.

HALFTIME: Virginia Tech 17, Boston College 7

After a sluggish and turnover-riddled first quarter, Virginia Tech and Boston College have settled in a bit more as they head to halftime. The offenses have taken over, too. Virginia Tech QB Hendon Hooker has been perfect -- literally -- going 8-for-8 with 89 yards and a touchdown. What has hurt the Eagles more than anything are turnovers. BC has three after 30 minutes and trails by 10 because of it.

End 1Q: Alabama 7, Georgia 7

The most anticipated regular season game of the season has lived up to the hype early as Alabama and Georgia are tied after a quarter. The game got off to a bit of a weird start with two interceptions in the first three plays, but eventually things settled in a little bit. Mac Jones hit John Metchie III for a long touchdown to put Alabama up 7-0, but Georgia responded with a grown-man scoring drive capped off by a Zamir White touchdown run. The styles for these offenses are notable different. Alabama loves going over the top in the passing game while Georgia prefers to run the ball and hit shorter passes. Both have worked.

END 1Q: Virginia Tech 3, Boston College 0

It hasn't produced a lot of points, but Virginia Tech and Boston College have played pretty evenly through one quarter. The key difference is a pair of Boston College fumbles, one of which led to a Hokies field goal.

END 1Q: Florida State 7, North Carolina 0

Good start for Florida State as they play host to the Tar Heels. Quarterback Jordan Travis has a rushing touchdown and the Seminoles defense has been able to capitalize on some rare pass rushing success. Florida State's first sack in about a month took the Tar Heels out of field goal range. Obviously there's a long way to go in this one, but if you're an FSU fan you have to like this start.
