The list is getting shorter by the week. Twenty-six schools in the FBS remain undefeated entering the final week of September, and at least two more will fall from the mountaintop in Week 5.
The usual suspects are still pursuing perfection, though at least one blue blood will go down this week when Georgia travels to Alabama. It's one of two matchups of undefeated teams this week, with Illinois traveling to Penn State topping the Big Ten slate.
As for Week 4? Tennessee dominated Oklahoma, derailing the Sooners' schooner (and their anemic offense) in their SEC debut. Michigan and USC provided us a flashy finish, with the Wolverines serving the Trojans a loss in their Big Ten debut. Utah built a double-digit lead and hung on for dear life in the final minutes at Oklahoma State, cementing itself as the Big 12 favorite in its debut season in the league.
Elsewhere, the show went on as scheduled. Arch Manning stole the spotlight, again, in his first college start in Texas' blowout of ULM. Clemson demolished NC State in its ACC opener. Miami pulled away in a thrashing of USF in Tampa.
And Mizzou … well, the Tigers won. They survived in double overtime against – *checks notes* — Vanderbilt.
While we all obsess over what the top teams did (or didn't do), let's give the Group of Five a much-deserved round of applause. James Madison nearly made coaching legend Mack Brown call it a career after a 70-50 victory at North Carolina. Washington State remained undefeated with an entertaining overtime win late Friday night against San Jose State.
And how about our service academies? Army and Navy are both undefeated and could legitimately start the season 4-0 for the first time since 1945. It was in that year the programs met for the "game of the century" in the wake of World War II, with Army prevailing 32-13 to cap an undefeated season. Both Army and Navy are favored on the road this week, so history is there for the taking. Good luck, gentlemen.
Four teams in the AP poll lost at home in Week 4, the highest total of the season, and six ranked teams fell overall, including two to unranked opponents. Teams in the top 10 won by an average of 37.2 points. As you might expect, we enter Week 5 with a few shifts – and newcomers – in the power rankings.
