We have one more week remaining in The Bottom 25 season, and we're very close to crowning a new champion.

Normally the picture would be a lot clearer at this point, but the team currently ranked No. 1 in our rankings still has a game left to play, which leaves things up in the air. Just not that high up in the air.

I can tell you this because even though my rankings aren't based on opinion, but instead involve data from games being played, I know what the future holds. Right now, Texas State is the only team in our Bottom 10 with a game left to play, which keeps things rather simple.

If Texas State loses to Arkansas State this weekend, it's our Bottom 25 champion. If it wins, then the title will go to either Rutgers or Kansas. That itself is still up in the air because, even though both teams have finished their seasons, the Big 12 has plenty of games left to play this weekend that could end up affecting Kansas' strength of schedule as well as a few other factors. Still, Kansas is the heavy underdog to Rutgers at this point.

So while things haven't been decided in whole, the important parts are all pretty much decided. Before we get to the actual rankings, though, here's a quick reminder on how it all works.

1. My opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the rankings. They are based on a mathematical formula of my creation. Keep this in mind before you call me an idiot, which I know you will.

2. There is true equality to start. Math doesn't play favorites. Before the season begins, defending national champion Alabama is just as good as our defending Bottom 25 champion Central Florida. The only factor that matters in the rankings is how you've performed on the field in 2016.

3. Wins and losses mean more than anything. I have a lot of different statistics involved, and I factor in strength of schedule (remember, everybody begins the season with the same SOS), but at the end of the day whether you won or lost is going to mean more than anything else. Also, my formula doesn't have much respect for FCS teams.

4. I won't share the formula. I just don't want to. I'm not a mathematician. I know my formula isn't perfect. I don't think a perfect formula can exist, so I don't share it because I don't care what anybody thinks about it. So don't ask.

25. Florida International, 4-8 (Last week: Not Ranked): Just in case he wasn't aware of how difficult a task he had in front of him, Butch Davis is now inheriting a Bottom 25 team.

Last week: 42-28 loss at Old Dominion | Next week: No game

24. UTEP, 4-8 (9): The Miners finish their season with a big win, but it wasn't enough to get out of The Bottom 25.

Last week: 52-24 win vs. North Texas | Next week: No game

23. Utah State, 3-9 (NR): The Aggies have been hovering around The Bottom 25 for weeks now, and this week's loss against BYU was finally enough to bring them down to us.

Last week: 28-10 at BYU | Next week: No game

22. Bowling Green, 4-8 (16): It wasn't a good season for Bowling Green, but ending it on a three-game win streak should have the Falcons feeling good about themselves heading into 2017.

Last week: 27-19 vs. Buffalo | Next week: No game

21. Charlotte, 4-8 (23): The 49ers can take some solace in the fact that six of their eight losses came to bowl-eligible teams.

Last week: 33-14 loss at UTSA | Next week: No game

20. Arizona, 3-9 (10): A bad season is a bad season, but it feels a little better when you finish it by beating your hated rival.

Last week: 56-35 win vs. Arizona State | Next week: No game

19. Syracuse, 4-8 (22): Imagine scoring 61 points in a game and losing by 15.

Last week: 76-61 loss at Pitt | Next week: No game

18. Kent State, 3-9 (21): This is the third year I've done The Bottom 25, and this is the third year Kent State has finished in it.

Last week: 31-21 loss vs. Northern Illinois | Next week: No game

17. San Jose State, 4-8 (8): It was nice to end the season on a high note, but that fourth win wasn't enough to save Ron Caragher's job.

Last week: 16-14 win at Fresno State | Next week: No game

16. New Mexico State, 3-8 (24): The odds aren't great, but a win over South Alabama this week could get the Aggies out of the rankings.

Last week: 37-7 loss vs. Appalachian State | Next week: at South Alabama

15. Florida Atlantic, 3-9 (19): Imagine scoring 56 points in a game and losing by 21.

Last week: 77-56 loss at Middle Tennessee | Next week: No game

Last week: 38-13 loss vs. Tulane | Next week: No game

13. UL-Monroe, 4-7 (15): The Warhawks had last week off. Sources tell me they ate a lot of turkey.

Last week: No game | Next week: vs. UL-Lafayette

12. East Carolina, 3-9 (18): The Pirates opened the season 2-0, and then won only one of their last 10 games.

Last week: 37-10 loss at Temple | Next week: No game

11. Rice, 3-9 (13): Was there a sadder game this weekend than Stanford and Rice? I mean, could either team have been less interested in playing that game?

Last week: 41-17 loss at Stanford | Next week: No game

10. Illinois, 3-9 (11): The Big Ten will have four teams ranked in the top 10 of the College Football Playoff this week, and it will also have three teams ranked in The Bottom 10. Illinois' 21-point loss to Northwestern helped the conference put the finishing touch on a very impressive season.

Last week: 42-21 loss at Northwestern | Next week: No game

9. Purdue, 3-9 (7): The Old Oaken bucket was so close, Boilermakers. So close. The good news is you can now focus all your attention on finding a new coach.

Last week: 26-24 loss at Indiana | Next week: No game

8. Virginia, 2-10 (12): The Hokies did not show the Cavs any mercy.

Last week: 52-10 loss at Virginia Tech | Next week: No game

7. Marshall, 3-9 (14): I really did not see this kind of season coming for Marshall, and I'm just glad for everybody involved that it's over.

Last week: 60-6 loss vs. Western Kentucky | Next week: No game

6. Massachusetts, 2-10 (6): At least the Minutemen got to finish their season with a trip to Hawaii.

Last week: 46-40 loss at Hawaii | Next week: No game

5. Buffalo, 2-10 (5): It was a good season to be Buffaloes, but not a good one to be Buffalo.

Last week: 27-19 loss at Bowling Green | Next week: No game

4. Fresno State, 1-11 (3): In any other year, I feel like Fresno State being the only one-win team in the country would have made it a lock for the title, but there were just too many really bad teams this season. And Fresno wasn't good, but it just wasn't bad enough. It's like a Bottom 25 purgatory.

Last week: 16-14 loss vs. San Jose State | Next week: No game

3. Kansas, 2-10 (4): The Jayhawks weren't able to carry all the momentum from that win over Texas into their game against Kansas State.

Last week: 34-19 loss at Kansas State | Next week: No game

2. Rutgers, 2-10 (2): So if you're a Rutgers fan, are you rooting for or against Texas State this week?

Last week: 31-13 loss at Maryland | Next week: No game

1. Texas State, 2-9 (1): I already told you what's on the line this week. If Texas State loses, it's our Bottom 25 champion, and that's why the Bobcats game against Arkansas State is our Bottom 25 Game of the Century of the Week.

Last week: 40-7 loss vs. Troy | Next week: vs. Arkansas State

No Longer Ranked: Tulane (17), Missouri (25)
