Auburn has made another defensive coaching hire in the wake of Will Muschamp leaving to be South Carolina's new coach. The Tigers have added New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff as their new secondary coach and co-defensive coordinator.
Last week, Auburn hired away LSU's defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele, to the same position.
McGriff has been with the Saints coaching the secondary for the past three seasons after spending years as a college assistant with Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Miami and Baylor. His most recent college coaching job was as Ole Miss' co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach in 2012.
"I'm really excited to be working with Coach Malzahn and his staff at Auburn," McGriff said in a statement. "I've always had a high regard for Auburn and the football program and I’m looking forward to helping them win championships."
Said Malzahn: "I'm very pleased to add Wesley to our staff at Auburn. He has a tremendous amount of experience and success in developing players at the college and NFL levels. Wesley’s a true professional and a man of character that will be a great coach and mentor for our players."
Defense has been a major issue for Auburn over the last couple of seasons, and the hope is now that Steele and McGriff can team up to fix what even Muschamp could not in his one year with the team.
