Duke vs. North Carolina score, takeaways: Blue Devils rout Tar Heels as Cooper Flagg flirts with triple-double

DURHAM, North Carolina -- The 263rd meeting between Duke and North Carolina was one-sided, an 87-70 Duke rout that felt twice as bad. Eleven miles and two realities separate the Blue Devils and Tar Heels this season: Duke has an argument as the best team in the game, while North Carolina is continuing its every-other-year trend of life on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

There was no blowout boredom at Cameron Indoor Stadium; the Tar Heels had won three of their last four here and swept last season's series. Highlight plays were aplenty. There were beautiful alley-oop lobs to Khaman Maluach. There was a a Kon Knueppel second half flurry of dunks and three-pointers. And of course there was a basketball masterclass by Cooper Flagg, who came within shouting distance of the first triple-double in the history of one of sports' greatest rivalries: 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, plus three steals and two blocks.

Here are more takeaways from Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke is a still-improving juggernaut

Before the second half began, Knueppel walked over to the Cameron Crazies at halfcourt and asked them, in fewer words, if they were ready to go for the second half (I know because I was seated right under the Crazies, with one of them even nearly busting my lip in the first half). Knueppel then opened the half with a two-handed dunk in traffic. He drilled a three-pointer on the next possession. Minutes later, he drove UNC's RJ Davis to the left block and converted scored easily despite the harm. It was a flurry of points.

As America comes out of its football thaw the next few and weeks turns its sports attention to March Madness, it is going to learn that Duke is far from just Flagg. There's Knueppel, the former five-star who is out of Wisconsin central casting. Maluach, the 7-footer out of South Africa who's still in his basketball infancy. Tyrese Proctor is out of his month-long slump. Sion James, the transfer out of Tulane and the point guard most likely to win Mr. Universe. The longer they play together, the better they get.

Pencil in any -- or all? -- of the non-Flagg standouts to have a moment or two as Duke rounds into Final Four form.

Cooper Flagg's POY case

Flagg led all scorers in the first half with 13 despite a near-15 minute stretch where he didn't score. He can just fill it up so quickly – a corner 3-pointer here, a transition three there, a silky-smooth turnaround jumper at the first-half buzzer.

With Zach Edey gone, the national player of the year race is finally interesting. It's Flagg vs. Auburn's Johnni Broome. Here's how CBS Sports college basketball analyst Kyle Boone handicaps the Flagg vs. Broome battle.

The case for Cooper Flagg as the Player of the Year in college basketball is the case for impact beyond the box score. He is not leading college basketball in points, or rebounds, or blocks, or assists. And his counting stats aren't quite touching the ceiling Zion Williamson produced in his one season at Duke. But he's leading Duke in every relevant statistical category on a Blue Devils team that now leads the nation with a 15-game winning streak and has both a top-three offensive and defensive unit in adjusted efficiency margins.

Advanced numbers tell the story of his impact in a way that counting stats don't quite do justice. He leads major conference college hoops players in Win Shares, which is an estimate of the number of wins contributed by an individual player. He's No. 2 in Box Plus/Minus, a stat that estimates the points per 100 possessions a player contributes above a league-average player. And his Player Efficiency Rating of 28.9 is just shy of the magical 30, which over the years belongs only to the elite of the elite.

Most important to Flagg's case is Duke's ascension with him leading the way. The team opened the season 4-2 with losses to Kentucky and Kansas, and it has not lost since. Its 15-game winning streak includes wins over now-No. 1 Auburn, which no other team to this point has defeated, and which Duke won with Flagg outdueling fellow Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome. Duke is only getting better as the season progresses and that has been a direct correlation to Flagg's rise to stardom. The best player on the best team isn't always the best choice for Player of the Year. But in the case of Flagg and Duke, it appears as things sit on Feb. 1 it is the correct one.

North Carolina's season is on the brink

You don't have to be a next-level basketball-knower to gather these two rosters are at different levels. North Carolina was a preseason top-10 team on the merit of what it accomplished last season in making the Sweet Sixteen as a No. 1 seed and returning players like Davis and Elliot Cadeau; it is now on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble with a 6-5 record in ACC play and little relief coming: Pittsburgh, at Clemson, at Syracuse, home vs. NC State. A 2-2 mark in those four would be cause for relative celebration.

A more thorough examination of what is wrong and how it happened is required, but this much was clear Saturday: North Carolina was smaller, less skilled, on a different planet from Duke defensively, likely intimidated and perhaps totally outclassed on the bench. It's going to be a long week off for the Tar Heels.

Duke extends winning streak to 15

Final: Duke 87, UNC 70

Another game, another win for No. 2 Duke, which extended its nation-long winning streak to 15 games with a cozy 17-point home win over rival North Carolina. The Blue Devils led by as many as 32 points in this one and never trailed after jumping on the Tar Heels early and often.

Duke freshman Kon Knueppel led all scorers with 22 points and teammate Cooper Flagg finished with 21 points, eight boards and seven assists in the win. Flagg accounted for 37 total points between points scored or assisted on, and added three steals and two blocks along the way.

UNC did its best to try and make things interest late -- but it was indeed too late after the Blue Devils built a lead that proved insurmountable. It went on an 18-2 run in the second half and still only cut the lead to 16 before losing by a final margin of 17.

The win moves Duke to 19-2 on the season and keeps it a perfect 11-0 in ACC play, marking the program's best start in nearly two decades after starting the 2005-06 season 27-1 overall and 14-0 in league play. The Blue Devils go on the road Wednesday as ACC play continues with a test vs. Syracuse.

All Duke in this one

U12 timeout: Duke 71, UNC 44

No halftime adjustment can help erase what seemed to be -- and clearly was -- an insurmountable lead vs. the No. 2 Blue Devils. The Tar Heels have showed some fight in this second half but it's still all Duke in a blowout.

All the usual suspects who contributed to Duke's big lead in the first half have been the ones who have helped Duke sustain it. Kon Knueppel has 11 points in the second half, Cooper Flagg has six and Tyrese Proctor and Sion James have a combined 10 points.

Duke dominating North Carolina in Durham

Halftime: Duke 47, UNC 25

No. 2 Duke, which closed as a 13.5-point favorite over rival North Carolina, leads by 22 points (!!) at the half in Durham, North Carolina. That's five points shy of UNC's largest deficit of the season -- which it set earlier in the first half after Duke jumped out to a 40-13 lead.

"I think we're playing really hard. Our ability to switch a lot has been great," Duke coach Jon Scheyer said on ESPN at halftime.

Blue Devils freshman Cooper Flagg leads all scorers with 13 points thus far and also has a game-high five assists and four rebounds. He has accounted for 24 of the team's 47 points and also added two blocks and two steals.

Fellow freshman Kon Knueppel has nine points and backcourt running mate Tyrese Proctor is up to 10 points.

The big difference so far has been Duke forcing UNC into bad decisions and capitalizing. Duke has scored 11 points off nine UNC turnovers and been able to get out running in transition where it is comfortable.

Duke's also made just about everything and poured it on in runs in that first 20 minutes. It is 5 of 11 from 3-point range with four different players making at least one shot from beyond the arc. UNC on the other hand is 3 of 11 from 3-point range and 8 of 27 from the field.

Big tweak for UNC in the second half, although it may be too late, might be more run for freshman forward Drake Powell. Powell played just nine minutes in the first half but gave UNC some good minutes limiting Flagg's impact.

RJ Davis, Elliot Cadeau and Ian Jackson will need to get going for the Tar Heels to have a shot, too. Davis is 2 of 6 from the field, Jackson 0 of 3 from the field and Cadeau 1 of 5. Cadeau also had trouble handling the ball that first half with five turnovers to just two assists.

North Carolina's vibes are bad

U4: Duke 40, North Carolina 18

Seth Trimble was holding a towel to his face. One UNC assistant coach's arms are crossed. Another is shaking his head in frustration. Two are staring off into space. Head coach Hubert Davis looks like he's ready for it to end.

Meanwhile, Duke's bench is rocking, with up to three assistant coaches at one time working a ref. Jon Scheyer is springing up and down, constantly moving, gesturing, yelling, grimacing. Two similar programs experiencing very different seasons.

Duke rout is on

U8 timeout: Duke 34, UNC 13

Yes, yes, you read that correctly: Duke 34, UNC 13.

The rout is on in Durham as No. 2 Duke is putting on a show on both ends vs. rival North Carolina. Tar Heels just 5 of 15 shooting and already up to seven turnovers in this one.

Duke on the other hand getting everything it wants on both ends. It has converted nine points off forced turnovers, and shooting 11 of 19 from the field led by Cooper Flagg's nine points.

Tyrese Proctor has eight points and Kon Knueppel has seven.

Coach K is in the house

Former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is here with his wife, Mickie. They're seated on the baseline. Duke was rattling off the name of its notables who are here -- such as ESPN's Jay Bilas and Jay Williams -- and then finished with Coach K, who got a loud, standing round of applause.

During the last TV break, Krzyzewski took photos with a few kids who came up to ask.

The Boozer twins, Cameron and Cayden, are also here. They're seated behind the Duke bench. Carlos' sons signed with the Blue Devils in November.

Duke cruising early

U12: Duke 25, UNC 8

No. 2 Duke has seized control of this one early in Durham with Cooper Flagg and Sion James leading the way for an early 17-point lead inside Cameron Indoor. Flagg has nine points on three field goal attempts as well as four assists, and Sion James has six points.

Flagg was the story entering the game and has been the story of the game thus far. He has yet to miss a shot from the floor and has scored or assisted on 18 of Duke's 25 points.

Flagg shakes off understandable nerves, then rolls

U16 timeout: Duke 16, UNC 6

Cooper Flagg missed each of his first two free throw attempts of the night -- nerves for his first UNC game? -- but has otherwise been clearly the best player on the court. Flagg's drilled two three-pointers, including the one that sent Duke into the first media timeout up 15-6, and has assisted on the rest of Duke's field goals, firing a quick pass out of a double team cross-court to Tyrese Proctor.

Expert picks for Duke-UNC

There's a consensus among our college basketball team on who will win this Duke-UNC game tonight.

Everyone on our staff picked the No. 2 ranked Blue Devils to win. However, most of us anticipate UNC will keep this one relatively close and within the number, which closed at UNC +13.5.

Here's CBS Sports' David Cobb on his pick -- and mine -- for this one.

North Carolina is erratic and flawed but won't be lacking in talent or motivation. Much will be made — and rightfully so — about how the Tar Heels will try and contain Duke star Cooper Flagg. But the Blue Devils must also slow down a deep group of perimeter weapons for the Tar Heels. RJ Davis, Ian Jackson and Seth Trimble have each gone for 25+ points at least once this season and will be raring to go for this one. Look for UNC to produce enough offensive fireworks to keep it competitive. Pick: North Carolina +13.5 -- Cobb

Let's have some fun!

Where'd all this Duke talent come from?

The Blue Devils' starting five is ridiculous. Talented and tall, Duke has four former five-star recruiting prospects in its starting lineup. The outlier, Tulane Sion James, has turned into a terrific college point guard and one of the best portal gets of the last cycle.

Here's the quick recruiting backstory on Duke's starting five. A lot of players are going to get introduced to guys like Khaman Maluach tonight.

A product of the NBA's Africa Academy, Khaman Maluach was pursued by the elite programs. Duke secured his first official visit last January and then had to hold on and fight as he took visits to three more blue bloods in KansasKentucky and UCLA. Maluach also checked the G League Ignite program.

Ultimately, it came down Duke and Kansas. The Blue Devils edged out the Jayhawks in March.

North Carolina's best talent, true freshman Ian Jackson, probably needs a career night if the Tar Heels, a heavy underdog, are going to win.

Inflection point for UNC season?

Hubert Davis and his Tar Heels began the season ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25 but were the first team OUT of the projected bracket in Jerry Palm's latest Bracketology entering the weekend. The season has gone anything but according to plan as UNC stumbled to a 4-4 start to the season and has been up and down since, with a 13-9 overall record entering tonight's Duke game.

A win tonight could serve as a launchpad for UNC to break out in the right direction with March fast approaching. But a loss would be its fourth in its last five games and a missed opportunity to establish some much-needed momentum.

There's no such thing as a must-win game on Feb. 1 because there is plenty of season left to be played, but going on the road and beating a talented Duke team in their own barn would do wonders for its flagging confidence with the midway point of ACC play coming up.

Series history between Duke, UNC

Saturday night's tilt between No. 2 Duke and North Carolina will be the 263rd meeting between the two teams in a rivalry that dates back to 1920. Here's some factoids to tuck away ahead of the game to help impress your friends on the couch while you watch.

  • UNC leads the all-time series 145-117
  • Duke holds a 56-52 record in games played in Durham and is 47-40 in games played inside Cameron Indoor Stadium
  • Duke has won 51 of the last 100 meetings in the series
  • Saturday will mark the fourth time Duke and UNC have played on Feb. 1 in the calendar, with the road team winning in each of the previous three instances. Duke won in 1930 and in 1952 on Feb. 1 in games played in Chapel Hill, while UNC won on Feb. 1, 2001, when they faced off in Durham.
  • UNC defeated Duke in both meetings last season, including an 84-79 win in Durham to wrap up the regular season.
  • UNC has 21 wins over top-five ranked Duke teams in the history of the series.
  • The last time UNC beat Duke when Duke was ranked inside the top two of the AP poll was when it beat No. 1-ranked Duke on Feb. 20, 2019, in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Luke Maye scored 30 points and Cam Johnson had 26 in the road win for the Tar Heels. That was the game Zion Williamson's shoe exploded 30 seconds into the first half, and he did not return.

Duke's nation-long winning streak on the line

It's not Duke-North Carolina without some potential drama, now is it?

No. 2 Duke's 14-game winning streak -- the longest active streak in the sport -- is on the line for the first rivalry meeting of the season between the two Carolina schools. Duke didn't lose at any point in December or January after starting 4-2 on the season with five and three point losses to Kentucky and Kansas, respectively.

That streak includes a perfect 10-0 start in ACC play.
