Virginia, as expected, secured at least a share of the ACC regular-season title Wednesday night via a 65-54 win over Georgia Tech. So Tony Bennett has now won three ACC regular-season titles in the past five years. For the purposes of comparison, consider that Duke's Hall of Fame coach, Mike Krzyzewski, hasn't won an ACC title since 2010. And he's the GOAT.
In other words ... wow.
And, yes, I know Bennett still hasn't taken Virginia to a Final Four. And I realize that's a negative bullet point attached to his name. But if he keeps assembling teams that earn high seeds in the NCAA Tournament, it is, I think, just a matter of time before that changes. And, frankly, it shouldn't surprise anybody if it changes next month considering it's difficult to imagine the Cavaliers being anything other than a No. 1 seed on Selection Sunday.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
For now, Virginia remains No. 1 in Thursday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 (and one). Meantime, Texas Tech dropped to No. 11 after Wednesday's 79-71 loss at Oklahoma State. And Virginia Tech's move up to No. 25 (via Wednesday's 65-61 win over Clemson) caused Arizona State to drop to No. 26, no fault of its own. It's just that I now believe the Hokies are both playing better than Arizona State, and in possession of a better resume than Arizona State. To wit, Virginia Tech is 4-1 in its past five games with wins over Virginia, Clemson and NC State -- all three of which are top-50 KenPom opponents. So now the Hokies have five top-50 KenPom wins compared to Arizona State's four. And Virginia Tech's losses are undeniably better than ASU's, at least at this point.
