Wednesday is annually the lamest day of what is commonly referred to as Championship Week. Only one automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is up for grabs. Most of the teams playing are bad. Not much happens that truly matters.
But now we're in high gear.
The next four days should be amazing. Bubble teams like Indiana, Michigan, Rutgers, Florida, Texas A&M, VCU, Virginia Tech and SMU will be fighting for their lives while non-bubble teams try to climb in the bracket. Gonzaga has already locked up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in a five-tournament span thanks to a 26-3 record featuring 10 Quadrant 1 wins. Can Arizona also secure a No. 1 seed simply by avoiding a loss to Stanford in Thursday's quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament? Does Baylor need to win the Big 12 Tournament to get a No. 1 seed for the second straight year? Does Kansas need to win the Big 12 Tournament to get a No. 1 seed for the fourth time in a six-tournament span? Is there a path to a No. 1 seed for Mike Krzyzewski's Duke Blue Devils?
All of these questions (and more) will be answered over the next four days. In the meantime, 14 teams listed in Thursday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings are scheduled to play Thursday. The first is No. 9 Duke against Syracuse (sans Buddy Boeheim) at noon ET. The last is No. 24 USC against Washington at 11:30 p.m. ET.
