Live updates and analysis as the college basketball transfer portal opens amid March Madness action
The NCAA transfer portal cycle for the 2025 college basketball season opened March 24 and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As the transfer cycle begins, expect major movement across the sport. Top players are already being linked to the portal, and NIL remains a driving factor in player decisions. This could be the most talent-rich portal cycle yet -- and with more money in play than ever before, no player or program is off limits.
The 2025 cycle brings a few key changes. Most notably, the portal opens a week later than it did in 2024, no longer overlapping with the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. This shift means 75% of tournament teams will already be eliminated by the time players can officially enter.
Additionally, the transfer window has been shortened from 45 days to 30. The move is part of an effort to create more stability and predictability for college programs navigating roster management, recruiting and NIL negotiations. By closing the portal before the grassroots recruiting calendar kicks off in May, the NCAA hopes to reduce overlap and roster uncertainty.

Elliot Cadeau from UNC to Michigan
Elliot Cadeau, a former five-star recruit and North Carolina transfer, has found his next home. The 6-foot-1 point guard from West Orange, New Jersey will transfer to Michigan.
As a sophomore at UNC in 2024-25, Cadeau averaged 9.4 points and 6.2 assists per game, good for second overall in the ACC. He shot 44.5 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from three. Cadeau was also second in the ACC in turnovers, with 3.1 per game.
"The (Michigan) coaching staff really believe in me and know what I can do," Cadeau told 247Sports. "I want to play in an offense that best suits me and my abilities, with the correct players around me so we can all win."
Bryce Hopkins heading to St. John's
Providence forward Bryce Hopkins will transfer to Big East rival St. John's, sources confirm to 247Sports. Hopkins' 2024-25 season was cut short with an injury after he missed the second half of the 2023-24 season with a torn ACL.
Hopkins will join head coach Rick Pitino in his third season at St. John's. Last season, Pitino led the Red Storm to a 31-5 overall record, a Big East regular season championship, and a Big East Tournament championship.
St. John's is expected to lose star forward and Big East Player of the Year RJ Luis to the transfer portal.
A 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward, Hopkins has been productive when he has been healthy. He signed with Kentucky out of high school and played in 28 games and only averaged 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds across 6.5 minutes per game. He left Lexington after his rookie season and transferred to Providence.
Maryland stars hit the transfer portal
Maryland star guards Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Rodney Rice entered the transfer portal on Monday, just over 24 hours after Kevin Willard accepted the vacant job at Villanova, 247Sports reported. Maryland is expected to lose its entire starting lineup from last season, which was among the most productive in the sport.
Maryland star forward Julian Reese and guard Selton Miguel are out of eligibility. Star center Derik Queen will likely head to the 2025 NBA Draft as a projected lottery pick.
All five Maryland starters averaged at least 12 points per game. The Terrapins were the only team in Division l basketball to do so. Maryland's starters combined to score 69 points per game total — the 10th most by an NCAA Tournament team in the last 10 years.
Rice transferred to Maryland following the 2022-23 season and did not play last year. In his first season playing for Maryland, he averaged 13.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Gillespie transferred to Maryland last offseason after spending two years with Belmont. He averaged 14.7 points (second-most on the team), 4.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds.
Maryland finished the 2024-25 season 27-9 and lost to No. 1 seed Florida 87-71 in the Sweet 16.
Miami guard Nijel Pack has entered the transfer portal, sources tell 247Sports. Pack averaged 13.9 points and 4.3 assists in only nine games this season, so if you're wondering how he still has availability then the assumption would be 2024-25 is a redshirt year and the 2020-21 covid-19 season does not count against his eligiility.
Pack made national news three offseasons ago when he inked a two-year, $800,000 NIL package with Miami. It looked like a big number then, but $400,000 annually now would be rather low for a high-end starter.
Pack averaged 13.6 points during Miami's 2022-23 season, which ended in a Final Four run.
