Memphis vs. Houston score: Cougars secure second straight AAC Tournament title, seize momentum for Big Dance
Kelvin Sampson's group has overcome injuries to notch yet another championship
Houston added an AAC Tournament title to go with its regular-season crown on Sunday as the No. 1 seed Cougars defeated No. 3 seed Memphis 71-53 to enter the NCAA Tournament with momentum. Fabian White Jr. led Houston with 20 points, and Josh Carlton added 18. The Cougars' defense held Memphis to just 1 of 10 shooting from 3-point range.
The outcome marked some revenge for Houston, which suffered two of its three AAC losses against the Tigers during the regular season. Memphis had won 12 of its past 13 games entering Sunday and was seeking its first AAC Tournament championship since the league was formed for the 2013-14 season. Instead, it's Houston's second straight AAC Tournament title.
At the very least, both teams were destined for at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, but bragging rights were at stake nonetheless. In the end, a Houston team that has gritted through season-ending injuries to key guards Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark proved that it is still the league's top dog.
