Diaz earned the save Friday against the Cubs despite allowing a run on two hits in a walk in the ninth inning. Diaz allowed the first two baserunners to reach safely before surrendering a one-out double to Seiya Suzuki. While one run scored on the play, Jacob Hurtubise would throw out Nick Madrigal at the plate as the tying run before Diaz got Cody Bellinger to fly out, sealing a 5-4 victory. While it didn't come easy for Diaz on Friday, he's now converted four straight save opportunities while allowing just one earned run in his last 5.2 innings. Diaz's ERA still sits at an uninspiring 5.91 with a 1.55 WHP and 22:15 K:BB across 21.1 innings this year. He's converted 11 of 13 save chances overall.... See More ... See Less

Reds' Alexis Diaz: Earns ninth save
Diaz threw a perfect ninth inning against the Dodgers on Saturday to secure his ninth save of the season. Diaz sat down Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez on a total of seven pitches to nail down the win for starter Hunter Greene. While Diaz still has an ugly 5.95 ERA this season, his job as the Reds' closer is not in jeopardy. He's squandered just one save in his last 10 chances, and with only two hits and two walks allowed in his last four appearances, Diaz seems to have turned the page after a rough stretch in mid-May.... Reds' Alexis Diaz: Rebounds for eighth save
Diaz earned the save in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Padres, logging a strikeout and a walk in a scoreless inning. After issuing a leadoff walk to Jurickson Profar in the ninth, Diaz struck out Manny Machado before inducing a game-ending double play off the bat of Jake Cronenworth to close out the shutout victory. It's an encouraging bounce-back effort from Diaz, who'd allowed five runs (four earned) in his previous three appearances (2.1 innings) while taking a pair of losses and a blown save. The 27-year-old right-hander still sports a subpar 6.62 ERA with a 1.64 WHIP and 18:14 K:BB across 17.2 innings while securing eight saves in 10 opportunities this season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Blows save Monday
Diaz (1-2) allowed two runs on a hit, a hit batsman and two walks without striking out a batter in one-third of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Monday versus the Diamondbacks. Diaz loaded the bases with back-to-back one-out walks, and Kevin Newman delivered the walk-off two-run single. This was Diaz's first blown save since his season debut, but he's hardly been dominant lately, allowing seven runs with a 5:6 K:BB over his last 3.2 innings. The closer has a 6.75 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 16:12 K:BB while converting seven of nine save chances through 14.2 innings on the year.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Grabs fifth save
Diaz earned the save in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Phillies, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning. After allowing three runs and blowing a save in his first outing this year, Diaz has converted his subsequent five save opportunities, allowing just one run while striking out 10 over his last nine appearances. His ERA is down to 3.48 with a 1.16 WHIP across 10.1 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Collects second save
Diaz picked up the save Monday against Milwaukee. He pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one walk and no hits, with no strikeouts. Diaz entered the ninth inning with a two-run lead but didn't pitch as cleanly as his line looks. Not only did he walk Christian Yelich in the inning, but he also beaned Sal Frelick before wrapping up the save with a Rhys Hoskins flyball. Diaz remains the main saves option in Cincinnati despite his rocky start with a 7.20 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over his first five appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Blown save in 2024 debut
Diaz (0-1) was charged with the blown save and the loss Saturday against the Nationals. He allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one batter in one-third of an inning. Diaz had some calls go against him and the game-tying run came across on a hit-by-pitch that just grazed Keibert Ruiz's uniform. Still, it was a rather uninspiring performance as Diaz's stuff looked flat and his command was off. Diaz ran out of steam down the stretch last year, but he should still have a decent leash in the closer role early in 2024. Emilio Pagan, Lucas Sims and Brent Suter represent the top options behind Diaz should he fail to get on track.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Makes second spring appearance
Diaz allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one over one inning in Monday's spring game against Oakland. Diaz made his second Cactus League appearance, entering to start the fourth inning. He's one of a handful of closers deemed to have a high degree of security, so it will take more than one deleterious spring outing for the Reds to be concerned. Diaz recorded 37 saves (40 chances) in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Needed in non-save situation
Diaz allowed three runs on two hits while not retiring a batter in Sunday's 15-7 loss to the Cubs. A depleted pitching staff caught up with the Reds, as a slugfest used up several pitchers before Diaz entered a 5-5 game in the eighth inning. The bases were loaded when the closer entered, and Diaz sandwiched a pair to two-run singles around a throwing error of his own. The silver lining is that he used up only 14 pitches, and Diaz should be available if a save opportunity presents itself Monday against Seattle.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Collects seventh win
Diaz (7-4) picked up the win in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs, giving up a hit and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. The Cincy closer got the call in the top of the ninth with his team down 2-1 at home, and he was rewarded with the win when the Reds staged a rally against his Chicago counterpart Adbert Alzolay. Diaz has collected four of his seven wins (plus two of his 35 saves) over his last seven appearances as Cincinnati tries to secure a playoff spot, a stretch in which he has a 0.00 ERA and 0.91 WHIP despite a 7:5 K:BB.... Reds' Alexis Diaz: Notches 35th save
Diaz walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 35th save of the season in a 4-1 win over the Giants. He needed 20 pitches (12 strikes) to get the job done after walking Patrick Bailey to begin the frame, but Diaz got a little defensive help from Elly De La Cruz to avoid any further trouble. Diaz's 35 saves ties him for the NL lead with Camilo Doval, but the Reds' closer is showing signs of wearing down -- through 10.1 innings in August, he has a 10:8 K:BB to go along with his 2.61 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.... Reds' Alexis Diaz: Blows save, snags win
Diaz (6-4) allowed three unearned runs on a hit and a walk while striking out one over one inning, taking a blown save but earning the win Saturday over the Diamondbacks. A Matt McLain error in the 10th inning allowed the Diamondbacks to extend a rally, erasing the Reds' three-run lead. Cincinnati retook the lead in the 11th, and Lucas Sims secured the save to allow Diaz to back into a win. Diaz has allowed seven runs (three earned) across 9.1 innings while posting a 9:7 K:BB in August -- shaky work for one of the better closers in the game this year. He's at a 2.22 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 77:27 K:BB through 56.2 innings while going 34-for-36 in save chances.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Perfect for save No. 34
Diaz picked up the save in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Angels. He struck out one over a clean inning. Diaz notched his first save since Aug. 7 -- his longest stretch without a save this season -- by registering a perfect ninth frame. Though Diaz hasn't been a save contributor as of late, he picked up a win in each of his previous two appearances and hasn't allowed a hit in the past 3.2 innings of action. Despite the drought, Diaz remains MLB's leader in saves, and he boasts a 2.30 ERA and a 75:24 K:BB across 54.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Takes loss in 10th
Diaz (3-3) took the loss Friday against the Nationals. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out three without a walk over 1.2 innings. After retiring the side in order in the ninth to preserve the tie, Diaz returned for the 10th but couldn't get through the extra frame as Lane Thomas smacked a two-run homer on the right-hander's 32nd pitch of the night. Reds manager David Bell asked a lot of his closer in this one and he fell a little short, but if anyone deserves a mulligan, it's Diaz. He still has just one blown save on the year compared to 32 successful save conversions.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Notches 32nd save
Diaz struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save over the Cubs on Monday. Diaz faced the top of Chicago's order with Cincinnati clinging to a one-run ninth-inning and made things look easy, throwing all nine of his pitches for a strike to retire the side in order. The fireballer finished July having converted all 10 of his save opportunities, allowing just three earned runs over 11.1 innings and posting an 11:1 K:BB. Diaz has emerged as one of the league's elite closers in his second big-league campaign, leading the majors with 32 saves and posting a 12.9 K/9 over 50 appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Labors in one-out save
Diaz allowed a hit and a hit-by-pitch but recorded the final out to earn the save Tuesday against the Brewers. The Reds closer was called upon with two outs in the ninth inning after Daniel Duarte was unable to maintain a 4-0 lead. Diaz struggled to record the final out, as he gave up an infield single and plunked Willy Adames in the head before inducing a flyout to end the game. The right-hander secured his 30th save of the season in the end, but he's now allowed two runs on five hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while recording just four outs over his past three outings. Diaz has made seven appearances in the last 10 days, which could prompt manager David Bell to look elsewhere should a save opportunity arise Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Works for 29th save
Diaz picked up the save in Saturday's 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out two over one inning. Diaz struggled to close out Saturday's contest, serving up a solo homer to Corbin Carroll while also allowing a double to Christian Walker in the ninth, though the closer still managed to secure his 29th save of the season. The outing marked his first earned run allowed since July 3 (seven innings), a stretch in which he's a perfect 8-of-8 in save opportunities.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Unable to strand runner
Diaz allowed one hit and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning in Sunday's 4-3 loss to Milwaukee. The game was setting up as a save opportunity for Diaz, as the Reds entered the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead. However, setup reliever Lucas Sims allowed a run and left with a runner on second base. Diaz was summoned earlier than usual but was unable to prevent the inherited runner from scoring, as Andruw Monasterio's flare to right field landed in play. The All-Star closer has a better-than-average 80.5 percent strand rate.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Tallies 26th save
Diaz earned a save against the Brewers on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over one inning. Diaz came on in the ninth inning with Cincinnati holding a three-run lead. He struck out Jesse Winker and Christian Yelich before giving up a single to William Contreras, but that hit proved harmless when Diaz got Willy Adames to ground out to end the game. Surprisingly, the talented closer had gone eight straight outings without picking up multiple strikeouts before Sunday, but he had still gotten the job done with five saves in six chances along with a 2.25 ERA during that span. Diaz has blown only one save opportunity all season and is tied for the MLB lead with 26 saves overall.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Alexis Diaz: Picks up save
Diaz allowed one hit in a scoreless inning while earning a save over Washington on Monday. Diaz worked around a one-out single to pick up his 24th save of the year Monday. It was his first scoreless appearance since June 28 after allowing a run in each of his last two outings. The 26-year-old lowered his season ERA to 2.13 with a 58:19 K:BB through 38 innings. However, he's punched out just one batter over his last four frames.... See More ... See Less
