Player Outlook
Enough undersized hitting prospects have gone on to have massive MLB success in recent years that Jett Williams doesn't face as much skepticism as he may have five or 10 years ago. A 5-foot-6, 175-pound up-the-middle defender with 70-grade speed, Williams has a keen eye and is adept at making pitchers throw him something he can drive. He had 13 home runs and 45 steals on 52 attempts in 121 games as a 19-year-old across Single-A, High-A and Double-A. Williams logged an excellent 35.9 Hard% while showcasing his masterful command of the zone (22.1 K%, 19.5 BB%). His groundball rate was under 35% at both Single-A and High-A, so Williams should be able to get the most of his power potential. He played 92 games at shortstop and 21 games in center field, with second base and left field also being obvious spots he could play as needed. Williams should return to Double-A for the start of his age-20 season.

  • Mets' Jett Williams: Receives another cortisone shot

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns revealed Tuesday that Williams has received another cortisone injection in his right wrist, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Williams was given his first injection in early May, but the shot evidently didn't have the desired effect. If the second injection is also ineffective, it's possible the young shortstop will require surgery, per Stearns. Williams was slashing just .179/.360/.308 for Double-A Binghamton before being placed on the 7-day injured list, though the wrist injury could have played a part in his struggles.

  • Mets' Jett Williams: Targeting late-May return

Williams (wrist) received a cortisone injection last week, and he won't begin swinging a bat again until it's fully taken effect, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 20-year-old prospect was shut down April 21 due to right wrist soreness and hasn't played since. Williams was struggling in his first look at Double-A pitching, slashing .179/.360/.308, but a wrist issue could help explain the poor performance. Per Mets senior vice president of player development Andy Green, the team is hoping Williams will be back in the lineup for Double-A Binghamton by the end of the month.

  • Mets' Jett Williams: Getting on base at Single-A

Williams is hitting .207 with a .401 OBP, one home run and 13 steals in 34 games for Single-A St. Lucie. The 19-year-old shortstop has a strong batted-ball profile, with a 32 percent groundball rate and all-fields approach, but it hasn't translated into a high batting average in the early going. Even as an undersized 5-foot-6 middle infielder, Williams is strong where it counts and is expected to eventually develop notable over-the-fence power to go with his 70-grade speed.

  • Mets' Jett Williams: Solid start in rookie ball

Williams has played in 10 games for the Mets' Florida Coast League affiliate, putting up a .250/.366/.438 line with a homer, six steals and a 4:6 BB:K. He's certainly living up to his name on the basepaths, as Williams has succeeded on all of his steal attempts. The 14th overall pick in this year's draft, the 18-year-old Williams is years and years away from the majors, but he's off to a fine start to his professional career.
