The Blue Jays designated Biggio for assignment Friday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. In order to make room on the active roster for Spencer Horwitz, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, the Blue Jays will push Biggio off their 40-man. The 29-year-old utility man began the year as an everyday starter, but he began losing work after slashing .200/.323/.291 with nine RBI through 130 plate appearances. Although his .614 OPS on the year represents the lowest mark of his six-year MLB career, his defensive versatility could still make him an attractive option for other organizations.... See More ... Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Slugs second homer
Biggio went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and an additional run scored in Sunday's 14-11 loss to Detroit. Biggio's home run Sunday was his first since the season opener way back on March 28. The 29-year-old has been in and out of the lineup this season due to subpar performance, batting .208 with two home runs, nine RBI and 12 runs scored in 38 games. Sunday's showing was a step in the right direction, but Biggio will need to further prove himself to earn consistent playing time at second base over Davis Schneider.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Losing grip on regular role
Biggio is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. Biggio will hit the bench for the fifth time in six games, with three of those absences coming while the Blue Jays have faced left-handed starting pitchers and two coming versus righties. The 29-year-old has maintained a strong-side platoon role at second base for much of the season, but with his OPS sitting at .621 through 29 games, Biggio looks like he could lose work to Davis Schneider moving forward.... Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Ducks out of lineup against LHP
Biggio is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. With southpaw MacKenzie Gore on the hill for Washington, the lefty-hitting Biggio will retreat to the bench. Toronto will insert Isiah Kiner-Falefa into the lineup as its starting second baseman.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Sitting against lefty
Biggio is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Nationals. Biggio is sitting out for a second consecutive contest, moving to the bench with southpaw Patrick Corbin on the mound for Washington. Instead, Isiah Kiner-Falefa will slide to second base while Ernie Clement mans the hot corner.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Absent from lineup
Biggio is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals. Biggio had started each of the last five contests for the Blue Jays but will begin Wednesday's game on the bench. Toronto will turn to Davis Schneider at second base and Addison Barger in left field.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Sits against southpaw
Biggio is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals. With the Blue Jays and Royals concluding their series with a day game after a night game and with a southpaw (Cole Ragans) on the hill for Kansas City, the lefty-hitting Biggio will get the afternoon off. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will step in for Biggio at the keystone.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Not starting Tuesday
Biggio isn't in the Blue Jays' lineup for Tuesday's game against Kansas City. Biggio will get a day to rest Tuesday after going 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored during Monday's victory. His absence will allow Davis Schneider to start at the keystone while batting sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Sitting versus southpaw
Biggio is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees. Biggio is in the midst of a nine-game hit streak during which he has a .902 OPS, but he'll take a seat Tuesday as lefty Carlos Rodon pitches for New York. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will shift to the keystone while Ernie Clement starts at third base.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Steals bag Tuesday
Biggio went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Mariners. The steal was his first of the season. Biggio has hit safely in five straight games and has been a near-everyday fixture in the Blue Jays' lineup, primarily at second base, but the team also hasn't faced many left-handed starters yet. Through 11 contests, the 28-year-old is batting .290 (9-for-31) with one homer, three runs and four RBI.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Late addition to lineup
Biggio is starting at second base and batting sixth Friday against the Yankees. The 28-year-old was originally absent from Friday's lineup, but he's now starting after Kevin Kiermaier was scratched with a back injury. Biggio is off to a slow start this season, going 3-for-17 with a homer, four walks, three RBI and two runs in six games.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Steps out of lineup
Biggio is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Yankees, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Biggio is mired in a 3-for-17 slump to begin the season and will head to the bench for Friday's series opener in New York. Davis Schneider will take over at second base against Yankees righty Marcus Stroman.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Reaches thrice, homers
Biggio went 1-for-2 with a solo home run, two walks and an additional run scored during Thursday's win over Tampa Bay. Biggio was excellent from the No. 9 spot Thursday, picking up his first long ball of the campaign in his second at-bat. The 29-year-old has hit better than .235 just once in his five-year career and has seen fewer than 340 plate appearances in four straight campaigns, but he could have the opportunity to exceed both of those marks in 2024 if he can build on the strong start.... Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Handling second base in opener
Biggio will start at second base and bat ninth in Thursday's season opener at Tampa Bay. Biggio is likely to see the bulk of the at-bats at the keystone against right-handers, much to the chagrin of Davis Schneider's fantasy managers. He will also be an option at third base some days.... Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Making Grapefruit League debut
Biggio (shoulder) will start at second base and bat second Thursday versus the Tigers in his Grapefruit League debut. Biggio has been brought along methodically this spring after coming into camp with tendinitis in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, but he's been ramping up of late and is now ready to test himself in a game setting. The 28-year-old is likely to fill a super-utility role for the Blue Jays this season, seeing time at second base, third base and right field.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Hits in simulated game
Biggio (shoulder) hit in a simulated game Sunday and has been going through full defensive drills, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Biggio has been slow-played this spring after reporting to camp with some tendinitis in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He's progressed well, though, and while it's unclear when he might play in a Grapefruit League contest, it doesn't appear to be far off.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Progressing well
Biggio (shoulder) has been hitting off a pitching machine regularly, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. It's not clear when Biggio might be cleared for Grapefruit League action, but the Blue Jays don't seem overly worried about his status at the moment. He's working his way back from tendinitis in his left shoulder.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Completes batting practice
Biggio (shoulder) was able to take a round of batting practice Thursday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Blue Jays manager John Schneider noted one week ago that Biggio was dealing with left shoulder tendinitis upon reporting to spring training, but the issue doesn't look to be anything too concerning. The fact that Biggio is already hitting without any apparent limitations bodes well for his chances of being available for Grapefruit League action in the near future, even if he's not included in the Blue Jays' initial spring lineups.... Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: In mix at second base, third base
Blue Jays manager John Schneider on Thursday mentioned Biggio, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Santiago Espinal when asked about the team's options at second and third base, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Notably absent was Davis Schneider, who the skipper said would focus on playing left field in addition to second base. Biggio did see most of the action at second base for Toronto down the stretch last season and started both games in the club's Wild Card Series loss to the Twins. The 28-year-old could be the favorite to handle the keystone against right-handed pitching, at least initially.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Gets $4.21 million
Biggio agreed to a one-year, $4.21 million deal with the Blue Jays on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The 28-year-old utility man has been a pretty steady producer for Toronto, save for a down 2021 season where he was worth -0.2 fWAR. Biggio is eligible at second base, outfield and first base, which is the most appealing aspect of his fantasy profile. He slashed .235/.340/.370 with nine homers and five steals in 338 plate appearances last season.... See More ... See Less

Mike Wilner@Wilnerness3H agoThis column will be in Saturday’s @StarSports , but you can read it now! My thoughts on #Bluejays move to finally bring up Spencer Horwitz and also say goodbye to Cavan Biggio: https://t.co/D6760aKRby

Mike Wilner@Wilnerness4H agoThere was a lot of reaction here to Cavan Biggio being DFA'd by #Bluejays today. Would have been great to have a lot of you on BlueSky, we could really be building a strong, vibrant #Jays community over there. I think it's worth your time to try.

Andrew Stoeten@AndrewStoeten2D agoAs someone who is always late for things the Blue Jays’ inability to score in the first inning is actually quite handy.

Mike Wilner@Wilnerness2D ago#Bluejays walk it off!!! Justin Turner leads off bot9 with his third hit of the game and his pinch-runner Cavan Biggio went to second on an errant pickoff throw, third on an Alejandro Kirk fly out and scored on IKF's game-winning single over Stowers' head in RF.

Andrew Stoeten@AndrewStoeten3D agoDO THE JAYS HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME PLAYOFF ODDITIES? With playoff odds of just 14.7% is the Blue Jays' season already doomed? Probably! But not necessarily! Or, at least that's what the recent history of playoff teams that started poorly tells us. https://t.co/rUo40xFIJ9 https://t.co/0G2Y3lf6vF

Andrew Stoeten@AndrewStoeten3D agoThe occasional home run seems an effective way of scoring multiple runs without requiring four or five slow guys getting on in a row, have the Blue Jays considered this?
