Player Outlook
Alex Bregman is entering into the final year of his current contract, and it could be a rather interesting year if new manager Joe Espada makes the obvious tweak in the lineup. Should Espada finally move Kyle Tucker into the 2nd spot and then use Bregman in between Tucker and Yordan Alvarez, Bregman would arguably be the best positioned hitter in baseball. The insulation of the talent in front of him and the threat behind him would put him in great position to once again drive in 100+ runs, something he has not done in the previous three full seasons. Bregman is a rarity in this modern game as a player who walks more often than he strikes out, but that success translates more to his on-base skills (.373 career) than his batting average (.274 career.) Bregman also is more at home facing fellow righties than lefties the past two seasons but his home/road splits aren't as extreme as one might believe. We'll go out on a limb and state that should Bregman hit third this season, he will win the AL MVP.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Scratched with hand soreness

Bregman has been scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to lingering left hand soreness, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Bregman was hit on the hand by a pitch during Tuesday's win over the Cardinals. X-rays came back clean, but with the hand not feeling 100 percent the team will play it safe. Bregman is expected to be back in the lineup Friday versus the Angels after Thursday's scheduled off day. Jake Meyers will enter Wednesday's lineup in center field, with Mauricio Dubon shifting to third base to cover for Bregman.

Bregman has hit five home runs in his last eight games.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: X-rays on hand negative

X-rays on Bregman's left hand came back negative after he was hit by a pitch during Tuesday's win over the Cardinals, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Bregman took a 93-mph sinker off his hand during the first inning of Tuesday's contest, but he was able to shake it off and remain in the game, going 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Precautionary X-rays confirmed the All-Star third baseman isn't dealing with any serious damage, but there is still a chance he sits out Wednesday's series finale in order to avoid playing with any lingering hand soreness.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Bat remains hot

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Sunday against the Twins. Bregman is starting to heat up, collecting his fourth homer in six games along with adding his fifth multi-hit effort over the last eight. Sunday's performance lifted Bregman's slash line to .229/.287/.395 while during this recent eight-game run he's batting 12-for-32 (.375) with four homers, seven RBI and five runs scored.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Three homers in four games

Bregman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Friday against the Twins. Bregman accounted for the Astros' only run with his seventh home run of the season. After a slow start to the campaign, he has started to turn things around, going 8-for-24 with three home runs, five RBI and four runs scored across his last six games. Bregman still has just a .652 OPS for the season, though he has managed 26 RBI across 55 games.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Belts sixth homer

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, an additional run and a triple in Thursday's 4-0 win against Seattle. Bregman broke a scoreless tie with his two-run blast in the fourth inning and came around to score Houston's final run following a triple in the sixth. It was the third multi-hit effort for the third baseman across his past five games, and he's batting .350 (7-for-20) with a pair of homers and four RBI over that stretch. Bregman could finally be getting his bat going following a rough start to the season that has his slash line still at a meager .218/.280/.360.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Leaves yard Tuesday

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Mariners. Bregman provided the Astros' lone run support with a two-run blast to left in the fourth off Luis Castillo. It was his first home run since May 14 and just his third extra-base hit since then. Despite multi-hit efforts in two of his last three games, Bregman is still hitting just .147 over his last eight games. His struggles have persisted throughout the season thus far, with the 30-year-old now slashing .212/.277/.335 with five homers, 23 RBI, 15 runs and a 19:30 BB:K in 224 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Working way out of slump

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a walk Sunday against the Athletics. Bregman has slumped for significant periods of the season and Sunday's performance was his first multi-hit game in his last eight starts. He's been unlucky to the tune of a .217 BABIP across 216 plate appearances on the campaign, though Bregman's struggles to make consistent quality contact make him susceptible to these results.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Goes deep again Tuesday

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Tuesday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Athletics. Bregman entered the Oakland series with one homer on the year, but he's hit three long balls and added two doubles over his last two games. The third baseman has gone 10-for-24 (.417) during a six-game hitting streak, though he's still got a long way to go to get his season-long numbers at an acceptable level. Bregman is slashing .225/.293/.358 with four homers, 18 RBI, 12 runs scored, eight doubles and two stolen bases over 39 contests.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Explodes for two homers, four RBI

Bregman went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs, a double, four total RBI, three total runs and a walk in a 9-2 victory against the Athletics on Monday. Bregman came into Monday looking like a shell of his former power-hitting self with just one long ball through 159 plate appearances, but he brought back reminders of his 41-homer 2019 campaign with a pair of solo blasts in the victory. The third baseman capped the big performance with a two-run double in the eighth inning, giving him a season-high four RBI and his second three-hit effort of the campaign. Bregman could be in the midst of turning around what had previously looked like a tepid season, as he's on a five-game hitting streak during which he's gone 8-for-20 (.400 average) with four extra-base hits and six RBI.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Modest three-game hitting streak

Bregman went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Saturday against the Tigers. Bregman delivered an RBI single in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to three games. While that's not particularly notable, he's collected a hit in three straight starts only two other times this season, with the most recent stretch ending April 15. The end result is that Bregman has just a .201 batting average across 154 plate appearances on the campaign, though he has improved his production of late by tallying six RBI across his last 13 contests.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Finally goes yard

Bregman went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run Tuesday against the Guardians. Bregman has been off to a slow start this season but has improved of late, as he's collected six hits in his last 23 at-bats. He also slugged his first home run of the season Tuesday. While Bregman has only a .078 ISO in 113 plate appearances this season, he's striking out at just a 12.4 percent clip, meaning his .216 average should continue to rise.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Shaking off cold stretch

Bregman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Sunday against Colorado. Bregman has an ugly .216 average in 108 plate appearances to start the season. He's shown small signs of turning things around at the plate, as he has at least one hit in three of his last four games. More concerning is that Bregman has just a .052 ISO to go along with two barrels in 81 batted-ball events.

Bregman (illness) will start at third base and bat cleanup in Monday's contest versus Atlanta. Bregman missed three games due to illness but is feeling up to participating in Monday's festivities. • Astros' Alex Bregman: Absence continues Sunday

Bregman (illness) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Bregman will sit for the third consecutive game as he continues to deal with an illness. According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Bregman was able to participate in baseball activities during a pregame workout, so he could be available off the bench and may be ready to return to the lineup Monday versus Atlanta. Mauricio Dubon will spell him at third base Sunday.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Battling illness

Bregman isn't in the Astros' lineup Friday due to an illness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Bregman has gone 7-for-19 with an RBI across his last four games, but he will sit down Friday as he recovers from an illness. Grae Kessinger will take over at third base and bat ninth, and he could be in line for more starts should Bregman have to miss multiple games.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: First multi-hit game

Bregman went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI on Monday against the Rangers. Bregman has gotten off to a slow start to the season, as Monday's performance marked his first multi-hit effort. He also has just two RBI and one run scored across 11 games. While it's been a frustrating opening to the new campaign, Bregman is still striking out just 15.6 percent of the time and should see the rest of his numbers normalize over time.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Houston will make extension offer

Astros owner Jim Crane said in an interview with Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle this week that the team will "definitely" make Bregman a contract extension offer before he reaches free agency next offseason. For what it's worth, Crane was asked about Bregman's contract situation prior to the club announcing Jose Altuve's five-year, $125 million extension. Bregman is nearly four years younger than Altuve and seems inclined at this juncture to test out the free-agent market, so a long-term deal doesn't appear super likely. The third baseman slashed .262/.363/.441 with 25 home runs and 98 RBI for Houston in 2023.

  • Astros' Alex Bregman: Goes yard in season finale

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, a triple and two runs scored in Sunday's win over Arizona. Bregman got the scoring started with his home run during Houston's four-run first frame. He snapped a nine-game homerless drought -- he went deep just three times since the start of September. The veteran third baseman finishes the 2023 regular season with a .262/.363/.441 slash line, 25 home runs, 57 extra-base hits and 98 RBI across 161 games.
