The World Cup is about to undergo a massive change. FIFA's ruling council is expected to approve the expansion of the World Cup from 32 teams to 48 teams on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has long been a fan of expanding the cup, meaning more money for FIFA and its nations.

The current 32-team format began in 1998. That format will continue through the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The report says the additional 16 spots will see the biggest increase in Africa and Asia, though each federation is expected to get at least a couple additional slots.

The potential profit for this modification for a World Cup is $640 million. If this happens, it is expected to be implemented for the 2026 World Cup, which could take place in the United States.

Of course, not everyone is for it. There is a huge concern that allowing more teams into the World Cup dilutes it, while also extracting importance from qualifying matches.
