Benching someone who was paid $72 million in the offseason isn't an easy move in the middle of a playoff hunt, but Bill O'Brien threw caution to the wind with the Texans struggling against the Jaguars on Sunday and sent Brock Osweiler to the bench.
It was a move we wholeheartedly agreed with (as did most of Twitter). And so did the guy that ultimately signs O'Brien's paychecks, Houston owner Bob McNair, who praised the "gutsy call" to bring in Tom Savage.
"I'm just glad I wasn't the one that had to make that decision," McNair said, via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. "I mean, that was a gutsy call. Give coach credit, he made a change and it was for the good of the team. We benefited from it. Now we have three good quarterbacks and we are proud of all of them."
So that's an interesting way to approach this situation, right?
McNair doesn't quite say "keep the guy who keeps throwing the backbreaking interceptions on the bench." He should, because my goodness these interceptions from Osweiler are horrible.

It's his FIRST career INT! #JAXvsHOUhttps://t.co/nq1G0gCfw2
I keep watching that throw and I keep getting really mad. Will Fuller has some cushion on Jalen Ramsey -- hit him in the numbers 17 yards down the field and you're picking up a first down.
Osweiler sails the ball, Fuller can't wrangle it and Ramsey records the first pick of his Jaguars career.
The difference between Osweiler and Savage was just flat-out notable and obvious.
So what will the Texans do moving forward? Starting Savage should be the easy decision. But sometimes these calls get clouded by football politics and the money involved. To McNair's credit, he's willing to let O'Brien choose who plays.
"Tom played very well," McNair said. "He got things going for us. That was a decision coach made and he's going to do what he thinks is best for the team. He will be visiting with the quarterbacks and working with them deciding what we will be doing going forward. That's his call."
The Texans have two games left this season. Next week they play the Bengals at home and in Week 17 they play the Titans on the road. The last one could be a de facto AFC South title game and either way, if the Texans win their last two games, they're going to the playoffs.
It's never been more critical to get quarterback play that qualifies as "not the worst in the NFL" and Savage offers Houston that, even if his paycheck is substantially smaller than Osweiler's.
O'Brien should make the right call independent of the finances and keep going with Savage.
