The Dallas Cowboys already have a former coach (Tom Landry) and a former general manager (Tex Schramm) in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and pretty soon, we could be adding an owner to that list.
If the selection committee listens to Cowboys Jason Garrett, then there's a good chance that Jerry Jones will be inducted into Hall of Fame sometime soon.
According to the Cowboys coach, there's shouldn't even be any debate about Jones' candidacy.
"For me, he's a first-ballot Hall of Famer," Garrett said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "If you think about the impact he's had on this league since 1989, it's way above my pay grade but I know he's had a huge impact in how we do TV contracts, how we market teams, I think he's helped grow this league as much as any owner I know of. There's no question the league is very different now than it was in 1989 and he's been in the forefront of so many of these big changes, these big developments, this growth that we've had. I just think he's done an amazing job."
Jones bought the team in February 1989 for all of $140 million, and he's gotten a nice return on investment. According to Forbes, the Cowboys are now worth over $4 billion.
During his 28 seasons as owner, the Cowboys have made the playoffs 13 times won three Super Bowls.
Also, as Garrett mentioned, Jones has been instrumental in financial aspects of the league. The Cowboys owner was played a big part in the recent relocation decision that ended with he Rams being moved to Los Angeles and not the Chargers or Raiders.
If Jones does get inducted, it could happen as soon as 2017. The Hall of Fame selection committee is scheduled to meet next week, where they'll nominate two contributors for induction into the Hall for 2017.
If Jones were to be nominated, he'd need to receive at least 80 percent of the vote from the 46-man selection committee to earn formal induction.
The Hall of Fame inductees for 2017 will be named on Feb. 4, 2017, the day before Super Bowl LI.
If the Cowboys are somehow playing in the Super Bowl this year and Jones is named an inductee, things will definitely get crazy in Houston, where Super Bowl LI is being played.
Anyway, the most recent owner to be inducted is Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who was inducted this year after owning the 49ers from 1977-2000. Before that, former Bills owner Ralph Wilson was inducted in 2009.
