76ers' Jalen Hood-Schifino: Inks two-way deal with Philadelphia

The 76ers signed Hood-Schifino to a two-way contract Friday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
Hood-Schifino was waived by the Jazz on Feb. 6 after being traded by the Lakers as part of the three-way deal that saw Anthony Davis go to the Mavericks and Luka Doncic being sent to the Lakers. When he was with the Lakers, Hood-Schifino appeared in only two games due to a hamstring injury, but he has a chance to see some minutes in a rotational role with the 76ers.
The Jazz waived Hood-Schifino on Thursday, Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
The Jazz are also waiving Josh Richardson, but they will hold onto KJ Martin. Hood-Schifino, who made just two appearances this season due to a left hamstring injury, could draw interest on the open market for teams looking to give the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft another chance.
Hood-Schifino (not with team) has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against Golden State.
Hood-Schifino will remain on the shelf after the Jazz acquired him via trade Saturday. The 21-year-old hasn't played at the NBA level since Dec. 1 due to a left hamstring strain, though the fact he is not listed on the injury report with the hamstring injury suggests that he could return to action as soon as Friday's matchup against the Suns.

Hood-Schifino was part of Saturday night's three-team trade between the Mavericks, Lakers and Jazz, which saw him get sent to Utah along with two 2025 second-round picks. Hood-Schifino has been out of action since early December due to a left hamstring strain, but once he's cleared to return he should have a shot at earning meaningful minutes in the Jazz's rotation. His next opportunity to play will be Wednesday against the Warriors.

Utah didn't give up anything in the deal and will receive a pair of second-round picks as a result of its willingness to take on the money remaining on the rookie contract of Hood-Schifino, who is scheduled for free agency this offseason after the Lakers declined his third-year option for 2025-26 in October. The 21-year-old guard will theoretically have a clearer path to playing time with a rebuilding Jazz squad than he did with the Lakers, but Utah is still unlikely to view Hood-Schifino as a key piece after he did little to distinguish himself as an NBA-caliber player through his first one-plus seasons in the league. Before getting on the court with Utah or its G League affiliate, Hood-Schifino will first have to recover from the left hamstring strain that has kept him out of action since early December.
