  • Cubs' Christian Bethancourt: Goes to Cubs on NRI deal

The Cubs signed Bethancourt to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

He'll be paid $1.6 million if in the majors, but with Carson Kelly and an out-of-minor-league-options Miguel Amaya already on the team, Bethancourt is unlikely to crack the Opening Day roster. The 34-year-old catcher spent the 2025 season at Triple-A Buffalo in the Blue Jays organization, posting just a .551 OPS. Bethancourt is a career .229/.259/.362 hitter over parts of eight big-league seasons.

  • Cubs' Tyler Austin: Returning to MLB

Austin signed a one-year, major-league contract with the Cubs on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Since taking his last MLB at-bat in 2019, Austin has spent the past six seasons playing in Japan for the Yokohama Bay Stars of Nippon Professional Baseball. After posting a .945 OPS during his time overseas, the 34-year-old will now return stateside to join the Cubs and could work as a platoon partner with Moises Ballesteros at designated hitter.

  • Cubs' Caleb Thielbar: Returns to Cubs

The Cubs re-signed Thielbar to a one-year contract Tuesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Thielbar collected a 2.64 ERA and 56:13 K:BB over 58 regular-season innings for the Cubs in 2025. Left-handed batters hit just .161/.211/.276 off the southpaw. Thielbar -- who will turn 39 in January -- will help set up from the left side in the Cubs' bullpen.

  • Cubs' Hoby Milner: Lands one-year deal with Cubs

The Cubs signed Milner to a one-year, $3.75 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Milner will be reunited with manager Craig Counsell, who he pitched for in three of his four years with the Brewers. The left-handed reliever spent the 2025 campaign with the Rangers, collecting a 3.84 ERA, 51.4 percent groundball rate and 58:21 K:BB over 70.1 frames.

  • Cubs' Justin Steele: Late start to season confirmed

Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed this week that Steele (elbow) will not be ready for the start of next season, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic report.

Steele underwent UCL revision surgery on his left elbow in mid-April, so it's not a surprise that he'll be in line for a stint on the injured list to begin the 2026 season. Counsell noted that the team will have a better idea as to a timetable for the left-hander in spring training, with the skipper noting that "I think it will be the first half of the season." Steele has collected a 3.18 ERA over 82 regular-season starts since the beginning of the 2022 campaign.

  • Cubs' Collin Snider: Signs MiLB pact with Cubs

The Cubs signed Snider to a minor-league contract Wednesday, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic report.

Snider had a breakout 2024 season in Seattle but struggled with the Mariners in 2025, collecting a 5.47 ERA and 24:6 K:BB over 26.1 innings. He missed time around midseason with a flexor strain but is healthy now.

  • Cubs' Scott Kingery: Nabs NRI deal from Cubs

The Cubs signed Kingery to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Kingery resurfaced in the majors in 2025 with the Angels for the first time since the 2022 season, but he went just 4-for-27 with 11 strikeouts at the plate. The 31-year-old will compete for a utility job in spring training but is a good bet to begin the season at Triple-A Iowa.

  • Cubs' Owen Caissie: Expected to get regular reps

The Cubs are currently projecting regular playing time for Caissie next season, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.

The club would also like to give Moises Ballesteros a chance to play regularly, though one of Caissie, Ballesteros and Seiya Suzuki will have to sit out most days. Caissie has nothing left to prove at Triple-A Iowa, having slashed .281/.380/.507 there over the last two seasons. He struggled in a cup of coffee with the Cubs, going 5-for-26 with 11 strikeouts, but is viewed as the team's top prospect.

  • Cubs' Phil Maton: Signs with Cubs

Maton signed a two-year contract with the Cubs on Friday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Maton's new deal also includes a club option for 2028. The 32-year-old spent time with the Cardinals and Rangers in 2025, finishing the regular season with a 2.79 ERA and 1.06 WHIP along with an 81:23 K:BB across 61.1 innings. Now with the Cubs, he's sure to continue pitching in high-leverage situations and will presumably be in the mix for saves alongside Daniel Palencia.
