Unsigned free agent right-hander Carl Pavano will miss the next 6-8 weeks with a ruptured spleen, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. The injury occured when he slipped and fell while shoveling snow. Given the timing, it seems unlikely that he'll be ready to pitch in a big-league game until May at the earliest.
Pavano, 37, had a 6.00 ERA in 63 innings across 11 starts for the Twins last year. His season ended in early June because of a shoulder problem. Pavano managed a 4.36 ERA from 2009-2011 while averaging more than 210 innings per season. Before that he had an injury-riddled four-year stint with the Yankees that included everything from bruised buttocks to Tommy John surgery.
The Mets and Rockies were among the clubs with interest in signing Pavano in recent weeks. New York plugged its rotation hole by signing Shaun Marcum on Thursday and Colorado recently added Chris Volstad.
