Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Snags fifth steal
Winn went 0-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-0 win over the White Sox. Winn reached on an error in the fourth inning, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, but then got stranded. The rookie shortstop has cooled off with no multi-hit efforts over his last 14 games, going 7-for-40 (.175) with three steals and a 9:12 BB:K in that span. On the year, he's slashing .279/.354/.372 with no home runs, seven RBI, 10 runs scored and five steals, offering solid speed but little else while batting in the bottom third of the Cardinals' order.... Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Sitting for nightcap
Winn isn't in the Cardinals' lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against Detroit, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Winn went 1-for-4 during St. Louis' Game 1 victory, and he'll get a breather to conclude Tuesday's twin bill. Brandon Crawford will fill in at shortstop and bat eighth during the nightcap.... Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Receives rest day
Winn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Mets, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Winn started the previous nine games but will take a seat Friday after he posted a .208/.394/.292 slash line during that stretch. Brandon Crawford will receive a start at shortstop in the series opener at New York.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Notches steal Monday
Winn went 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Winn has gone 3-for-13 with two walks, a double, a steal and two runs scored over his last four contests. The shortstop is in a starting role and leads the Cardinals with a .323 batting average. He's added an .824 OPS, four steals, six RBI, eight runs scored, three doubles and two triples, but he has yet to hit a home run this season. Winn should see a majority of the playing time at shortstop, with Brandon Crawford around to spell him occasionally.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Swipes bag in win
Winn went 0-for-1 with two walks, one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Athletics. Winn's run of three straight multi-hit efforts was snapped, but he still found his way on base. He also delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The 22-year-old has settled in admirably as the starting shortstop, batting .362 with an .885 OPS, three steals, six RBI, six runs scored, two doubles and two triples over 55 plate appearances. Winn has yet to hit a home run this year, but he's batting well enough to keep Brandon Crawford on the bench.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Not starting Sunday
Winn won't start Sunday against the Diamondbacks, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Winn takes a seat for the fourth time in 16 games this season, though he's off to a hot start with a .349 average, five RBI and two steals. Brandon Crawford will start at shortstop and bat ninth Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Notches second steal
Winn went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base Saturday in a loss to the Diamondbacks. Winn continued his excellent start to the campaign Saturday, collecting his sixth multi-hit effort through 14 contests. The talented young shortstop also provided a boost to his fantasy managers with his second steal of the season. Through 47 plate appearances, Winn is slashing .349/.356/.465 with four RBI, five runs, a double and two triples.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Getting day off
Winn is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Phillies, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. It's a simple day off for the rookie shortstop as the Phillies and Cardinals look to decide the series Wednesday. Brandon Crawford will fill in.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Sitting out Wednesday
Winn is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest in San Diego, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. It's a day off for Winn, who will yield to veteran Brandon Crawford at shortstop. Winn is 5-for-16 with one RBI and one stolen base in his first five games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Records first steal
Winn went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 6-2 win over the Padres. Winn picked up his first steal of the season while hitting safely in his third straight game. He's 5-for-14 with three strikeouts and two runs scored through four contests on the year. Winn received the starting job at shortstop early in camp and has done well to maintain that role early in 2024. Whenever he needs rest or gets in a rut, Brandon Crawford is around to give him a breather.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Still in line to start at shortstop
Winn has been told by the Cardinals that the shortstop job "is his to seize" even after the addition of Brandon Crawford, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak confirmed as much Tuesday, saying "this is Masyn's job," per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat. Crawford was officially inked to a one-year contract Tuesday and will provide some veteran insurance at short behind Winn. However, the 21-year-old is still fully expected to break camp as the starter, barring a dreadful showing this spring. Winn slashed just .172/.230/.238 in 37 games with the Cards last season but hit .288/.359/.474 with 18 homers and 17 steals in 105 contests at Triple-A Memphis.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Lifts second homer
Winn went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Padres. Winn tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth-inning blast. The shortstop continues to struggle at the major-league level -- he's gone just 7-for-31 (.226) over his last 10 games, though that's an improvement on his .173 batting average for the season. Winn has a .474 OPS, two homers, six RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases through 29 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Logs second steal
Winn went 0-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Reds. Winn reached on a fielder's choice and notched his second major-league steal in the fourth inning. It's been a rough adjustment to the majors for the rookie shortstop, who has gone 3-for-23 (.130) over six games in September. He's batting .156 with one home run, four RBI and six runs scored through his first 18 contests. While Winn is seeing a majority of the playing time at shortstop, Tommy Edman has occasionally filled in there as well.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Taking seat Friday
Winn is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Cincinnati, John Denton of MLB.com reports. It will be the third day off for Winn since he was promoted back on Aug. 18. He has managed just a .430 OPS in his first 17 major-league games, although he did hit his first homer earlier this week. Tommy Edman will get a start at shortstop Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Hits bench Sunday
Winn is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Tommy Edman will handle shortstop duties in the series finale after Winn manned the position in each of the past five games. While the long-term future remains bright for the 21-year-old rookie, he's gotten off to a slow start to his big-league career with a .170/.188/.213 slash line through his first 49 plate appearances for St. Louis.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Not in lineup Sunday
Winn is not in the lineup Sunday at Philadelphia. Tommy Edman will start at shortstop and bat leadoff as Nolan Gorman covers second base and Richie Palacios patrols center field. Winn, 21, has gone 5-for-29 (.172) with zero home runs and one stolen base through his first eight major-league games.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Achieves two firsts Wednesday
Winn went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Pirates. Winn checked off a couple of milestones with his first major-league RBI and steal in this contest. He's batting .217 (5-for-23) with a double over his first six major-league games while holding down the starting job at shortstop, as expected.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Possible waiver wire pickups
Of all the prospect call-ups from the weekend, Winn feels the most "right." He took a conventional path to the majors, without cutting any stop short, and arrives at his absolute hottest, having homered 10 times in his final 28 games before getting the call. That power surge was basically the last piece of the puzzle, rounding out a skill set that already included a good contact rate, base-stealing ability and highlight-reel defense (mostly because of his arm). The Cardinals will be careful not to let him exceed 130 at-bats, wanting to preserve his rookie status for next year, but he should get the majority of the starts at shortstop moving forward. At his peak, he could offer something like Randy Arozarena production, only at shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Grabs hit in debut
Winn went 1-for-4 in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Mets. Winn started at shortstop and knocked his first hit, a single, in the fifth inning. The top prospect has looked major-league ready for much of the year after slashing .288/.359/.474 with 18 home runs, 17 stolen bases and 61 RBI over 105 games with Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals will likely do everything to preserve his rookie status for 2024, which means he cannot accrue 130 at-bats. While Winn is likely to see the bulk of the time at shortstop, his playing time is likely to be managed by keeping him at or near the bottom of the order for the remainder of the season.... Bernie Miklasz@miklasz22H agoI look at the '24 Cardinals and how rarely they pull flyballs for power -- a huge reason for their puny HR total -- I wanted to look at Jim Edmonds. I don't have the data before 2002. But from 2002-2006 Jimmy batted .579, slammed 71 HRs and slugged 2.012 on pulled fly balls.
