Manager Joe Girardi hinted Sunday that Bird (ankle) likely won't be activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday, when the Yankees open a four-game series with the Angels in Anaheim, Mark Fischer of the Newark Star-Ledger reports. "Our people have determined that he's not ready to come back yet," Girardi said.

Girardi had stated prior to the weekend that Bird, who has gone 3-for-13 with two walks and one strikeout during a three-game rehab stint with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was "very close" to rejoining the Yankees. However, it appears the organization would prefer to have him rack up some more at-bats in the minors following a month-plus layoff due to the right ankle bruise. Once activated, Bird should quickly displace the struggling Chris Carter as the team's everyday first baseman.
