Oklahoma can kiss CFP goodbye
The College Football Playoff committee gave Oklahoma some leeway after its Week 9 loss to Kansas, keeping the Sooners at No. 9 in the initial rankings, well within earshot of the final four-team field. Well, you can bet that this Tuesday's rankings won't be as merciful. Oklahoma is now 7-2 and riding a two-game losing streak.
The Sooners are in a spot where they'll need some breaks to fall their way just to make the Big 12 Championship Game. Texas, Oklahoma State and Iowa State are all ahead in the standings, while Kansas State, Kansas and West Virginia are all jockeying for position with two conference losses. No two-loss team has ever made the CFP, and there's no chance that changes for an Oklahoma team without a conference title given this year's loaded field.
It's an extremely disappointing swing for Oklahoma, which looked as if it had cleared its biggest hurdle of the season a month ago with a Red River win against Texas. All the Sooners had to do was take care of business against one of the easiest remaining schedules among playoff contenders. Since the win over the Longhorns, though, Brent Venables' squad is 1-2 with a two-point win against hapless UCF keeping it afloat.
