Illinois coach Lovie Smith announced the dismissal of three players from the team on Wednesday.

Tight end Zarrian Holcombe and offensive linemen Darta Lee and Howard Watkins were arrested earlier this month and charged with residential burglary and aggravated robbery. All three were suspended indefinitely on May 10 following their arrests.

According to police, the three players entered another student's dorm room at around 1 a.m. while wearing masks and carrying a BB gun. The alleged victim believed the BB gun was real, and the three players went through his dresser and wallet. The victim then recognized one of the players by voice. After being found out the players claimed that they were just pulling a prank on the other student.

Clearly, neither the victim, the police nor Lovie Smith found it to be funny.

Both Holcombe and Lee saw some time in 2016 as freshmen, appearing in 13 games between them. Lee started two games at guard while Holcombe finished the year with two tackles.

Watkins was a three-star member of Illinois' 2017 recruiting class and enrolled at the school in January.
