College football scores, rankings, highlights: LSU, Michigan score lopsided wins over conference foes

The opening half of the 2023 college football season is in the books following a Week 7 that created even more separation in the College Football Playoff race. No. 15 Oregon State's 36-24 win against No. 18 UCLA was the last of four ranked matchups held Saturday, and three of those featured at least one Pac-12 school.

No. 7 Washington and No. 8 Oregon stole the spotlight Saturday afternoon as the Huskies secured a 36-33 win against the Ducks in arguably the best game of the year so far. Washington remains undefeated and owns the inside track to the Pac-12 Championship Game. Hours later, No. 10 USC suffered its first defeat of the season. The Trojans were outclassed in the trenches in a 48-20 loss at No. 21 Notre Dame.

No. 12 North Carolina posted a 41-31 win against No. 25 Miami. The victory moved the Tar Heels to 6-0 for the first time since 1997; the Hurricanes have now lost two straight after starting the season 4-0.

Speaking of the ACC, No. 14 Louisville is no longer undefeated after suffering a 38-21 loss to a Pittsburgh team that was previously winless in ACC play. No. 23 Kansas and No. 19 Washington State  were also among the ranked teams to lose to unranked opponents on Saturday.

While the list of undefeated teams is shrinking, others continue to cruise. No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Florida State and No. 6 Penn State all remain perfect after beating unranked competition Saturday, though some of those teams looked sluggish before pulling away. No. 11 Alabama and No. 19 Tennessee, both one-loss teams, also hung on for home wins against unranked Arkansas and Texas A&M, respectively.

CBS Sports was there every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening, which can be seen below.

Oregon State delivers statement

Final: Oregon State 36, UCLA 24

The Beavers defense forced three turnovers, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei tossed a pair of touchdown passes and Oregon State moved to 6-1 with a statement win over UCLA. With the win, Oregon State certainly puts themselves in the conversion for the Pac-12 title game. With USC, Oregon and Washington State all losing on Saturday, the Beavers could potentially control their own destiny if they win out the remainder of the season. The 36 points were the most points the Bruins have allowed all season and freshman quarterback Dante Moore looked shaky against a stout Oregon State defense. The Beavers close out the season against Washington and Oregon.

UNC remains unbeaten

Final: No. 12 North Carolina 41, No. 25 Miami 31

Welcome back, Tez Walker. The North Carolina wide receiver made his first appearance of the season last weekend after being cleared by the NCAA and Saturday was his breakout performance. Walker caught six passes for 132 yards with three touchdowns and should prove to be a reliable target for Drake Maye the rest of the season. North Carolina moved to 6-0 and they're looking like a serious contender in the ACC. As for Miami, they're coming off another disappointing loss after a last-second blunder last weekend against Georgia Tech.

Duke impresses without Leonard

Final: Duke 24, NC State 3

Duke just demolished NC State without completing a pass in the second half as the Blue Devils navigated an ACC battle without star quarterback Riley Leonard. The Blue Devils got 123 yards on 13 carries from Jordan Waters and were absolutely filthy defensively against the Wolfpack. NC State kicked a field goal on its opening possession and was held scoreless for the next 11. The only reason it even got the field goal was because of an interception that set up the Wolfpack in great field position. Henry Belin IV filled in for Leonard and completed 4 of 12 passes for 107 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. What an impressive win for coach Mike Elko and his squad.

ND makes statement

Final: Notre Dame 48, USC 20

That's all she wrote from South Bend. Notre Dame used a dominant second half to hand USC its first loss of the season. Despite only gaining 251 yards of total offense, Notre Dame controlled the game from the jump and burst out to a 24-6 halftime lead. Notre Dame's defense forced five turnovers and handed USC coach Lincoln Riley the worst loss of his coaching career. USC still controls its own road to make the Pac-12 title game, but this is certainly a major road block.

Missouri upsets No. 24 Kentucky

Final: Missouri 38, No. 24 Kentucky 21

The Tigers, who entered the game as 2.5-point underdogs, trailed by 14 after the first quarter, but got hot with 17 points in the second quarter en route to a big win over the Wildcats. It wasn't quarterback Brady Cook doing the damage for coach Eli Drinkwitz' crew this time, it was a stifling defense that gave up 286 yards and had seven tackles for loss on the evening. The Tigers are now bowl eligible and have matched their win total for each of the last two seasons.

North Carolina in the driver's seat

End 3Q: North Carolina 35, Miami 17

Well, this game was close for a while. In fact, Miami entered the second half with a 17-14 lead and some momentum after outscoring the Tar Heels 17-7 in the second quarter. But things fell apart for Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes in the third quarter. North Carolina ripped off a 21-0 scoring run and Miami's offense completely stagnated.

Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke had just 31 yards threw the air and tossed an interception that led to North Carolina's second touchdown of the quarter. Meanwhile, Drake Maye bounced back from a rough first half. He threw two 30-plus yard touchdowns to wide receiver Tez Walker and then had a third touchdown pass to Omarion Hampton near the end of the third frame. North Carolina has this one in-hand entering the fourth quarter.

LSU dominates Auburn

Final: No. 22 LSU 48, Auburn 18

LSU came out hot with the first 17 points of the game and cruised to an impressive win over Auburn on Saturday night in Death Valley. Quarterback Jayden Daniels had 325 yards passing and tossed three touchdowns, and added 93 on the ground in another Heisman Trophy-worth performance against a defense that has been rock solid for the majority of the season. Speaking of defense, the much-maligned LSU defense allowed just 293 yards. Is LSU back? It only has one loss in the conference and has a date with Alabama coming up next month. It doesn't hold the tiebreaker over Ole Miss, but things could get wild out west if the LSU defense has found its stride.

True freshman QB dazzles for Kansas State

Kansas State freshman quarterback Avery Johnson put on a show in Saturday's win against Texas Tech. He initially alternated possessions with starter Will Howard before running the offense outright in the fourth quarter. Johnson finished the game with five rushing touchdowns, accounting for all of Kansas State's points except for a field goal. He tallied 77 yards rushing and completed eight of his nine pass attempts for 77 yards in the 38-21 win. Johnson, the No. 9 quarterback in the class of 2023, is the highest-ranked quarterback to ever sign with the Wildcats since 247Sports began its rankings.

Pitt pulls it off

Final: Pitt 38, Louisville 21

Pitt snapped its four-game losing streak in improbable fashion, dominating Louisville in the second half en route to a 38-21 win over the No. 14 and previously unbeaten Cardinals. The Panthers outscored their visitors 24-0 in the second half, validating coach Pat Narduzzi's decision to go from Phil Jurkovec at quarterback to Christian Veilleux. Pitt's defense was the deciding factor, though, as the Panthers won the turnover battle 3-0 and forced Louisville to end the game with three consecutive turnovers on downs.

Notre Dame in control

End 3Q: Notre Dame 31, USC 13

After three quarters in South Bend, the home team is cruising toward a statement victory. USC running back MarShawn Lloyd scored on a 31-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 11 points before Notre Dame responded with a 6-play, 68-yard drive capped by a 46-yard touchdown pass by Sam Hartman to wide receiver Chris Tyree. USC started the season 6-0 and they're on the ropes heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Duke surviving without Leonard

Start 3Q: No. 17 Duke 17, NC State 3

Duke is navigating life without star quarterback Riley Leonard this week after he was injured two weeks ago in a heartbreaking loss to Notre Dame. The bye week gave Mike Elko and the Duke offensive staff time to cook up a gameplay for NC State tonight, and it's working so far. Henry Belin IV is just 4 of 11, but those four passes have gone for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Blue Devils have forced four punts and picked off a pass to take the pressure off the offense.

Statement game for Arizona

Mid 4Q: Arizona 37, No. 19 Washington State 6

Washington State's fall from Pac-12 contender and national darling is swift and stunning. Just a couple weeks ago, the Cougars were standing at 4-0 with victories over Wisconsin and Oregon State. They looked like a surprise league title contender. But after falling 25-17 at UCLA last week, it appears they are cooked. Arizona is up 37-6 in the fourth quarter on Wazzou and has limited the Cougars to just 205 yards. This will be a statement win for the Wildcats under second-year coach Jedd Fisch after they lost one-score games against Mississippi State, Washington and USC earlier this season.

LSU is dominating the "Tiger Bowl"

3:53 Q3: No. 22 LSU 34, Auburn 10

Weird things tend to happen when LSU and Auburn get together, but it isn't looking like this one will follow the script. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has three touchdown passes and its defense has held Auburn to just 172 yards in a game that got sideways in a hurry. This has been a tremendous performance from an LSU defense that was in desperate need of a boost after nearly a month of dysfunction. LSU only has one conference loss and has Alabama left on the schedule, so they still control their own destiny.

Miami takes lead into half

Half: Miami 17, North Carolina 14

Miami captured some momentum entering halftime, thanks to a 28-yard field goal from kicker Andres Borregales as time expired in the second quarter. The Hurricanes started that drive with the ball on their own 34-yard line and connected on a couple chunk plays to get into field goal range. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke hit wide receiver Isaiah Horton on a screen pass for a gain of 24 yards. Van Dyke then connected with Jacolby George for a 16-yard chunk play to move the ball inside North Carolina's 20-yard line.

Van Dyke had a very solid first half. The Miami quarterback hit on 13 of his 20 pass attempts for 180 yards and two touchdowns. George was responsible for 111 of those yards and had a 35-yard touchdown reception midway through the second quarter to give the Hurricanes a 14-7 lead.

Oregon State defense making plays

Halftime: Oregon State 23, UCLA 10

For the third consecutive game, UCLA quarterback Dante Moore threw an interception that got returned the other way for a touchdown. In the final minutes of the first half, Moore's pass was intercepted by Oregon State defensive back Ryan Cooper Jr. and he returned it 67-yards the other way for six. Moore was one of the top players in the 2023 class and it's obvious he is going through some freshman struggles against a stout defense.

Louisville in trouble

END 3Q: Pitt 31, No. 14 Louisville 21

We may have an upset brewing in the Steel City as Pitt has suddenly jumped out to a 10-point lead over No. 14 Louisville. The Panthers went ahead late in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by C'Bo Flemister, capping off a drive that chewed more than six minutes off the clock. One drive later, Pitt defensive back M.J. Devonshire intercepted Cardinals quarterback Jack Plummer and went 86 yards the other way for the touchdown, giving the Panthers a two-score lead. Louisville will have to mount a rally if it intends to move to 7-0 and keep a magical start to the 2023 season alive.

Notre Dame up big at the break

Halftime: Notre Dame 24, USC 6

USC is failing in its biggest test of the season thus far in South Bend. The Trojans are facing their largest deficit of the season and star quarterback Caleb Williams had one of the worst first half performances of his career in Southern California. Williams tossed three first half interceptions and things will need to change drastically in the second half if USC wants to mount a comeback. Notre Dame running back Auric Esteem has 40 yards and two touchdowns at the break.

Oregon State in control

End 1Q: Oregon State 13, UCLA 0

How about that Oregon State defense? The Beavers intercepted two passes from UCLA quarterback Dante Moore and held UCLA to 66 yards of total offense in the first 15 minutes of action in Corvallis, Oregon. Oregon State freshman quarterback Aidan Chiles has been receiving playing time sporadically and he tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to TE Jack Velling to extend the Beavers' lead to double digits. The winner of this game will remain in the hunt to play in the Pac-12 title game.

LSU leads Auburn at the break

HALFTIME: No. 22 LSU 20, Auburn 7

Auburn battled back in the second quarter as Jarquez Hunter capped off an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run for Auburn's its first touchdown of the game. That cut LSU's lead to 17-7 in a game that looked like it was about to get sideways after the first frame. Damian Ramos answered with a 35-yard field goal to make it a 13-point game to steal back a little bit of momentum. LSU had a great chance to put Auburn away after it took over at midfield, but quarterback Jayden Daniels was picked off by DJ James inside the red zone thwarting a key drive. Auburn couldn't get points out of the pick, but it kept the game within arm's reach. Auburn will receive the third quarter kickoff, which could be a make-or-break drive in the battle of the Tigers.

North Carolina up early

End 1Q: North Carolina 7, Miami 0

North Carolina has an early lead in Saturday's game against Miami. The two teams traded empty possessions to start the first quarter, but UNC started to gain some momentum during its second offensive drive. The Tar Heels got first-and-goal at Miami's 10-yard line. After a hold and incomplete pass, the Tar Heels were backed up to Miami's 18-yard line.

Turns out, third-and-goal on the edge of the red zone wasn't a problem for UNC. Quarterback Drake Maye threw a strike to wide receiver Tez Walker, who completed the catch for his first career touchdown with the Tar Heels. North Carolina will have the ball to open the second quarter with first-and-10 on its own 23.

Louisville in a fight with Pitt

HALF: No. 14 Louisville 21, Pitt 14

The Cardinals' quest to improve to 7-0 in their first season under coach Jeff Brohm may not come easy. So far, it's been a battle amid wet weather on the road against a 1-4 Panthers team. Pitt answered each of Louisville's first two touchdowns on the night to keep pace before the Cardinals went back ahead on Isaac Guerendo's second rushing touchdown of the game late in the half. Louisville has had trouble hanging on to the football, fumbling three times though only losing one of those. The Panthers have yet to turn the ball over. The Cardinals will get the ball to begin the second half, so they'll have a key opportunity to build a two-score cushion.

ND leads after one

End 1Q: Notre Dame 7, USC 3

After 15 minutes in South Bend, Indiana, Notre Dame leads USC. After the Irish intercepted USC star quarterback Caleb Williams on the first drive of the night, Notre Dame answered with a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Hartman to Gi'Bran Payne. USC is off to a 6-0 start to the season, but the Trojans have looked shaky through three Pac-12 games. Thankfully, this game has no merit on the race to reach the Pac-12 title game.

LSU dominating Auburn

End Q1: No. 22 LSU 17, Auburn 0

The first quarter of the battle of the Tigers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has been incredibly one-sided. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels hit Malik Nabers for a 29-yard score on its first possession, Damian Ramos kicked a 30-yard field goal on the second possession and running back John Emery Jr. scored from two yards out on the third in what is rapidly becoming a blowout. Daniels is 5 of 7 passing for 107 yards and the one touchdown, and running back Logan Diggs has 65 yards on the ground for LSU.

Pac-12 elimination game?

The winner of No. 18 UCLA's visit to No. 15 Oregon State can feel much better about its road to Las Vegas in a year where the sport's premier West Coast conference is stacked with talent before 10 members depart. This is also likely a de facto playoff elimination game considering that no two-loss team has ever reached the CFP. The Bruins are playing a ranked opponent for a third straight week, losing at Utah in Week 5 before beating Washington State in Week 6. The Beavers are also 1-1 against those opponents this season, except they lost to the Cougars before beating the Utes.

Washington shocks Oregon

FINAL: Washington 36, Oregon 33

Washington used a late passing touchdown from Michael Penix Jr. with 98 seconds remaining to shock Oregon and capture one of the biggest wins in program history. Penix threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns for the Huskies, but his back-to-back 35-yard completion to Ja'Lynn Polk and the 18-yard touchdown to Rome Odunze were arguably the biggest plays of his career, or at least matching the game-winner against Penn State when he was at Indiana.

Oregon took control of the second half, scoring 15 unanswered points over a six-minute period to retake the lead. However, quarterback Bo Nix missed on a fourth down conversion to give Penix his final opportunity. Kicker Camden Lewis missed a 43-yard field goal attempt that would have sent the game to overtime.

The win sends Washington to 6-0 and head coach Kalen DeBoer to 17-2 as coach of the Huskies. It also puts Washington in the driver's seat of the Pac-12 race as the Huskies join USC as the only undefeated Pac-12 teams in conference play. It also shoves Penix right into the middle of the Heisman Trophy conversation.

Trojans, Fighting Irish clash again

Looking to preserve a perfect record, USC has a chance Saturday to record back-to-back victories in its series with Notre Dame for the first time since the Pete Carroll era. The Trojans won eight straight against the Fighting Irish from 2002-09, but have prevailed just four times since and haven't emerged victorious at Notre Dame since 2011.

Quarterback Caleb Williams and the Trojans offense will have to produce amid ongoing defensive struggles for a Trojans team that has flirted with disaster each of the past two weeks. USC had to hang on for a 48-41 victory at Colorado in Week 5 after leading by four touchdowns. A week later, it fell behind 17-0 at home to Arizona before emerging victorious in a triple-overtime thriller.

Tennessee holds on against Aggies

Final: No. 19 Tennessee 20, Texas A&M 13

Tennessee's game against Texas A&M was a lot of things. Pretty was not one of them. The Vols' offense had one of their worst games under coach Josh Heupel, producing just a single touchdown, but defense and special teams cam through to hold on for a big win. Tennessee cornerback Kamal Hadden pulled down an interception with 22 seconds left to officially shut the door on the Aggies, who were trying to keep their hopes alive by going for it on fourth-and-10.

That marked Tennessee's second-straight drive with an interception. Cornerback Gabe Jeudy-Lally snatched a Max Johnson pass out of the air with 3:25 left, setting up a Tennessee field goal to create a touchdown of separation with less than two minutes to play. Tennessee's running backs deserve credit as well. The Vols rushed for 232 yards against a defense that only surrendered 84 yards per game entering Saturday.

Oklahoma State upends No. 23 Kansas

FINAL: Oklahoma State 39, No. 23 Kansas 32

For the second consecutive week, the Cowboys upend an opponent from the Sunflower State, this time knocking off No. 23 Kansas in a game that featured plenty of offense. The Big 12 foes combined for 49 points and more than 650 yards in the first half, though it was ultimately a late-game stop by Oklahoma State's defense that proved pivotal in the victory. All of a sudden, Mike Gundy has the Cowboys sitting 2-1 in conference play after they looked very shaky in non-conference. As for Kansas, an opportunity to already achieve bowl eligibility goes by the wayside, and any chance of a surprise run to the Big 12 Championship Game becomes increasingly difficult.

Penn State completes rout

FINAL: No. 6 Penn State 63, UMass 0

It was all Nittany Lions from start to finish as they roar to a 63-0 victory against the Minutemen. There was a point in the fourth quarter where Penn State had more points than UMass had total yards gained as the Nittany Lions ultimately finished with a 408-109 edge in total yardage. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar once again played a clean game. He finished 16 of 23 passing for 162 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for a score on a day where the Nittany Lions excelled in all three phases. While the competition will be rapidly increasing down the stretch, this looks like a team that is capable of going far as it seeks its first Big Ten championship since 2016.

Nolen helped off

Texas A&M defensive lineman Walter Nolen needed to be helped off on a cart after suffering an apparent injury in the fourth quarter against No. 19 Tennessee. Nolen fought through blockers on a routine play and jumped over a teammate, but fell awkwardly. He could not put weight on one of his legs and appeared to be in tears heading off the field.

Nolen ranks as the top-ranked player to ever sign with Texas A&M in the Class of 2022 and has taken a star turn over the past three games. He posted 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks over the first three games of SEC play.
