Week 6 of the college football season is (mostly, thanks to Hurricane Matthew) in the books. A handful of teams are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the pack as legitimate playoff contenders. It should be no surprise, then, that CBS Sports' Players of the Week generally reflects that.
From one quarterback's eight touchdowns to another standout performance from a true freshman, these players helped their team net another W in the loss column. For our SEC Player of the Week, history was made in a losing effort.
National Player of the Week
Jake Browning, QB, Washington: Oregon's defense might be awful, but there's something to be said for accounting for eight whole touchdowns in one game. That's exactly what Browning did in the Huskies' 70-21 throttling of its hated Pac-12 North rival. Browning had a part in all but two of Washington's 10 touchdowns. The sophomore went 22-of-28 through the air for 304 yards (at 10.9 yards per attempt) and six passing scores. He also added two touchdowns on the ground. When he has time, Browning can carve up defenses with the best of 'em. The combination of Browning and receiver John Ross has turned into one of the best quarterback-receiver threats in all of college football. It's hard to go undefeated, but Washington is barreling towards the playoff at the rate it's playing. Browning is a big reason why.
SEC Player of the Week
Alvin Kamara, WR, Tennessee: Even in a losing effort, Kamara was brilliant against Texas A&M. The running back had 127 yards rushing, 161 yards receiving, acted as a return man and had three total touchdowns. According to ESPN Stats and Info, Kamara is the only Power Five player in the last 20 years to accomplish that much in terms of yardage. Not even Stanford's Christian McCaffrey did that much.

Yes, ball security was an issue for Tennessee yesterday, but Kamara is why the Vols were even in a position to make a late-game rally in the first place.
Freshman Player of the Week
Jalen Hurts, QB, Alabama: Our own Dennis Dodd wrote that Alabama's offense has become the exact thing coach Nick Saban used to hate. But when you have a player like Hurts at quarterback, it opens up all new wrinkles to the offense. In a 49-30 win over Arkansas, Hurts had 273 total yards and four touchdowns. His ability to run on top of his passing skills gives Saban a weapon he's never had at Alabama (or anywhere else in college). As a first-year player, Hurts is going to have good days and bad days, but his ceiling is so high it's scary -- especially in Lane Kiffin's offense.
