The severity of Kentucky's 88-66 loss to Florida on Saturday night seemed lost on freshman sharpshooter Malik Monk.
Late in the second half, as the Wildcats were about to suffer their worst loss ever as an AP top 10 team, Malik was seen giggling on the bench.
The issue not only lies in the timing, but also the circumstance. The Wildcats are slumping badly, and Saturday's game was a startling sight for a team ranked No. 1 as recently as Dec. 4.
"We're just not playing well right now," said coach John Calipari, whose team has lost three of its last four games and now sits second in the SEC at 8-2 behind South Carolina.
Monk was 4-for-14 for 11 points, his second-lowest scoring output of the season.
While it's unfair to judge a young man (he turned 19 on Saturday) off a short video, the reaction in itself does raise some concerns. Whether Florida fans were singing him happy birthday at the time or not, it's not a great look to be enjoying yourself in such a deflating loss. And despite how you might imagine a player of Monk's caliber might react in such a defeat, it doesn't appear he'll be losing any sleep over it.
