Georgetown legend and former New York Knicks star Patrick Ewing is among the candidates under consideration to replace John Thompson III as the Hoyas’ coach, a source confirmed to CBS Sports on Friday.

The development was first reported by The Vertical

Thompson III -- the son of Ewing’s college coach, Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer John Thompson Jr. -- was fired by the school Thursday after finishing 14-18 this season and missing the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years. Ewing, 54, is the associate head coach of the Charlotte Hornets and has been an NBA assistant for 15 years. The Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer has become an increasingly viable head coaching candidate in the NBA and was in the running for the Kings job before Sacramento hired Dave Joerger last year, according to The Vertical.

Some other possible candidates for the Georgetown job include Rhode Island’s Dan Hurley, Providence’s Ed Cooley and Harvard’s Tommy Amaker. If Georgetown wants to swing really big, it could take a shot at Texas’ Shaka Smart or Notre Dame’s Mike Brey. Smart built his career at VCU -- which is just 108 miles from Georgetown’s campus. So he’s familiar with the area. And Brey was raised in the shadows of our nation’s capital -- specifically Bethesda, Maryland -- and is a graduate of George Washington University, which is just two miles from Georgetown’s campus.
