  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Takes batting practice Saturday

Yoshida (thumb) took live batting practice in Boston on Saturday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Yoshida was able to take another step in his recovery from the strain left thumb that has sidelined him since May 1. The outfielder said Saturday that he is "over the injury and it's a matter of building up," according to Abraham. Yoshida will likely need to embark on a multi-start rehab assignment prior to being activated from the injured list.

  • Padres' Logan Gillaspie: Back with Friars

The Padres recalled Gillaspie from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.

With Yu Darvish (groin) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) both headed for the injured list, Gillaspie and Randy Vasquez will come up from the minors to fill the openings in San Diego's pitching staff. Gillaspie has appeared in two games for the Padres this year, throwing 2.2 shutout innings, but he has posted a 5.17 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 15.2 frames in Triple-A. He will likely be limited to low-leverage situations while with the big-league club.

  • Will Brennan RF | CLE

Guardians' Will Brennan: On bench versus left-hander

Brennan will sit Saturday against Washington.

Brennan will remain on the bench as the Guardians face left-hander Mitchell Parker on the mound Saturday. Johnathan Rodriguez will draw the start in right field, batting fifth versus the Nationals.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Padres' Yu Darvish: Lands on injured list

The Padres placed Darvish on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left groin strain.

Darvish had to make an early exit from his start Wednesday against Miami due to hamstring problems, but the issue appears to instead be groin-related. His move to the IL is backdated to Thursday, allowing him to be eligible to return June 14. He will be joined by fellow starter Joe Musgrove (elbow) on the injured list while Randy Vasquez and Logan Gillaspie come up from Triple-A El Paso to take their places.

  • Steven Kwan LF | CLE

    Guardians' Steven Kwan: Breather Saturday

Kwan is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus Washington.

Kwan will head to the bench after he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in his return to the lineup Friday after missing nearly four weeks with a hamstring injury. David Fly will slot in at left field while Kyle Manzardo enters the lineup at designated hitter and bats sixth against the Nationals.

  • Andres Gimenez 2B | CLE

Guardians' Andres Gimenez: Sitting versus southpaw

Gimenez is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Nationals.

Gimenez will take a seat as Cleveland faces left-hander Mitchell Parker on the mound Saturday. Gabriel Arias will draw the start at second base and bat seventh against Washington.

  • Bo Naylor C | CLE

Guardians' Bo Naylor: Another day off versus left-hander

Naylor is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the Nationals.

Naylor will get another day off as the Guardians face left-hander Mitchell Parker on the mound Saturday. Austin Hedges will replace him at catcher and bat eighth versus Washington.

  • Victor Robles RF | WAS

Nationals' Victor Robles: Waived by Nats

The Nationals requested unconditional release waivers on Robles on Saturday.

Robles was designated for assignment Monday, and the Nationals will now opt to let him go rather than sending him outright to one of their minor-league affiliates. The 27-year-old has slashed .120/.281/.120 across 33 plate appearances in the majors this season, but he should be able to contribute for another outfield-needy organization -- even if only in the minors.

  • Justin Turner DH | TOR

Blue Jays' Justin Turner: On bench Saturday

Turner is out of the lineup Saturday versus the Pirates.

Turner will head to the bench after he went 2-for-11 with a double, two RBI, four walks and two strikeouts while starting the team's last three contests. Daniel Vogelbach will replace him at designated hitter and bat fifth against Pittsburgh.

  • Danny Jansen C | TOR

Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Sitting Saturday

Jansen will sit Saturday versus the Pirates.

Jansen will take a seat after he went 0-for-4 with two walks, a run scored and two strikeouts in Friday's 5-3 win. Alejandro Kirk will draw the start behind the plate and bat eighth against Pittsburgh.
