Player Outlook
Our 2023 outlook for Nate Lowe came together rather well in the end as the first baseman regressed to previous levels in the face of the new rules. Lowe remains one of the more disciplined hitters in the league who will patiently work a count while looking for his pitch while being more than willing to accept a walk in any given situation. Lowe's issues against lefties (.223) helped pull his batting average down in 2023, but given he hit .277 and .330 against lefties in the previous two seasons, it would not surprise us to see him recover in 2024 to add some more life to his average. Despite his size, Lowe has league-average speed but Texas has not put him in motion over the past two seasons after allowing him some opportunities in 2021. Lowe is in an enviable position of playing daily in a potent lineup and has the potential to drive in 100 and even score 100 if the guys around him stay healthy all season. 2022 may have been his ceiling, but maybe not.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Delivers lone run

Lowe went 0-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice fly and an RBI in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Giants. Lowe delivered the Rangers' lone run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. It was just his fifth RBI over the last 17 games. The slumping first baseman was recently removed from starting lineups against left-handers and is batting .207 (12-for-58) over the last 19 contests.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Returns against righty

Lowe started at first base and went 1-for-2 with a walk in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Tigers. Lowe returned to the starting lineup against a right-hander following three consecutive games on the bench against a lefty. He was eventually removed for pinch hitter Robbie Grossman in the ninth inning against a left-hander. Lowe's line against southpaws in 2024 is down from his career standard -- .619 OPS this season compared to .761 for his career -- but that's still better than the alternative. Ezequiel Duran, who started at first base while Lowe was benched, owns a .604 OPS against lefties in 2024.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Losing work against lefties

Lowe is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers. Though Lowe owns a 113 wRC+ against left-handers for his career, he's struggled to maintain that level of effectiveness in those matchups so far this season. Over 55 plate appearances versus lefties in 2024, Lowe is slashing .250/.327/.292 (80 wRC+). At least for the time being, manager Bruce Bochy is seemingly viewing Lowe as a platoon player. The first baseman is on the bench for the third game in a row, with the Rangers facing lefties in each of those contests.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Idle against lefty again

Lowe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. The lefty-hitting Lowe will remain on the bench for the second day in a row while the Rangers oppose another left-handed starter (Trevor Rogers). The Rangers will turn to Ezequiel Duran to replace Lowe at first base.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: On bench versus lefty

Lowe is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Marlins. Lowe will get a day off as Texas faces left-hander Ryan Weathers on Saturday. Ezequiel Duran will replace him at first base and bat fifth versus Miami.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Drives in two in win

Lowe went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Sunday's 6-2 win over Minnesota. Lowe had a pair of run-producing singles, his first multi-hit game since May 8. The first baseman entered Sunday with just six hits over the last 49 at-bats (.122). That slump prompted manager Bruce Bochy to drop Lowe to sixth in order against right-handers this past week.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Makes impact late in win

Lowe went 0-for-4 with two RBI in Saturday's 3-2 extra-innings win over the Angels. Lowe, who is hitless over his last 13 at-bats, was the late-game hero for the Rangers. He set up extra innings with an run-producing, eighth-inning sacrifice fly, then Lowe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th for the walk-off win. The two RBI give him 14 over 26 games.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: On base four times in win

Lowe went 2-for-4 with two walks, a double, two RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 15-8 win over Oakland. Lowe, who has yet to have a day off since returning from an oblique injury in mid-April, has reached base safely 15 times in 16 games. The first baseman leads the team with a .429 on-base percentage and possesses a career-high walk rate of 15.7 percent.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Racks up four hits Saturday

Lowe went 4-for-6 with a double, two runs and two RBI against the Royals in Saturday's 15-4 victory. The Rangers pounded Kansas City pitching for 17 hits in the win, and Lowe was a big contributor from the No. 3 slot in the lineup with a season-high four base knocks. The first baseman began the campaign on the injured list due to a right oblique strain, but he's slid into Texas' offense comfortably since returning, reaching base safely via hit or walk in all but one of his 13 contests. Lowe is slashing .333/.418/.458 with a home run, nine runs, four RBI and a stolen base through 55 plate appearances.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Two hit in win

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Reds. Lowe, batting third in the order for the fifth straight game, singled in the first inning and scored on Adolis Garcia's two-run home run. The first baseman has reached base safely in all eight games since returning from a season-opening stint on the injured list due to an oblique injury. Lowe is batting .310/.375/.448 with two extra-base hits, one RBI and five runs scored.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Goes deep in loss

Lowe went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 loss Seattle. Lowe reached down for a slider low in the zone to blast his first home run of the season. The first baseman has played in all five games since being activated off the injured list last Saturday.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Two hits in loss

Lowe went 2-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's 4-0 loss to Seattle. The Rangers' bats were quelled by Mariners pitching, but Lowe managed a second consecutive multi-hit game. After coming off the injured list Saturday, Lowe has appeared in all three games, batted fifth, and gone 4-for-11. In a normal world -- where the potent Texas lineup is producing -- Lowe's middle-of-the-order bat should provide him opportunities with runners on base.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Makes season debut

Lowe went 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta. Lowe was activated off the injured list and made his season debut, batting fifth and playing first base. He should be the primary first baseman going forward against lefties or righties.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: May not return this weekend

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Lowe will need "about 30 [at-bats], could be more" during his minor-league rehab assignment before returning from the 10-day injured list, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. After kicking off his rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco last Friday, Lowe looked as though he could be ready to rejoin the Rangers by the weekend. However, Bochy's comments suggest that the Rangers are planning for Lowe to have a more extended stay in the minors to get his timing back at the plate before reinstalling him as their everyday first baseman. Lowe has since shifted his assignment to Triple-A Round Rock and has gotten in 16 at-bats over five total minor-league games, recording just one hit (a home run) while drawing two walks. If Bochy sticks to his estimate of Lowe needing about 30 at-bats before being activated, the 28-year-old seems poised to remain with Round Rock through the weekend before rejoining the Rangers for the start of their homestand next Tuesday.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Rehab games coming soon?

Lowe (oblique) could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment after taking live batting practice Tuesday and Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Lowe is a month removed from suffering a right oblique strain and would appear past the injury at this point, so it's more about getting his timing down before rejoining the Rangers' lineup. Jared Walsh has been seeing the bulk of the reps at first base for Texas with Lowe out but would revert to a reserve role or occasional designated hitter when Lowe is ready.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Participates in batting practice

Lowe (oblique) took part in batting practice Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Lowe started the season on the 10-day injured list after being diagnosed with a right oblique strain in spring training. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy noted that Lowe will likely face live pitching in the next few days, per Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News, so a minor-league rehab assignment doesn't appear far off.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Heads to IL

The Rangers placed Lowe (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Lowe will be eligible to come off the IL ahead of the Rangers' April 5 game against the Astros, but the team is expecting him to be ready to return from his right oblique strain around mid-to-late April, per MLB.com. Jared Walsh and Ezequiel Duran are expected to form a platoon at first base to begin the season until Lowe is ready to return.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Dealing with side tightness

Lowe reported tightness in his side before the Rangers' Cactus League game against Arizona on Thursday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Lowe's side caused him to be scratched in favor of Jared Walsh, but manager Bruce Bochy didn't seem too concerned about Lowe's condition. Lowe is 3-for-18 with two RBI across seven games so far this spring, and his absence from the lineup will likely be brief.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Swats third double

Lowe went 1-for-3 with a double in Monday's spring game against the Angels. Lowe is 3-for-15 through six Cactus League games, and all three hits are doubles. While he was unable to repeat his 2022 Silver Slugger Award last season, Lowe remains a good contact hitter that sits in the middle of a productive Texas lineup. The first baseman should see a good share of opportunities with runners in scoring position.

  • Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Swats 17th long ball

Lowe went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the Angels on Monday in a 5-1 win. After Adolis Garcia and Mitch Garver hit consecutive solo homers in the sixth inning, Lowe made it three straight with his own blast to right field. The long ball was just his second over a 34-game stretch dating back to Aug. 19. Lowe has shown less power with 17 homers this season after slugging a career-high 27 last year, but he's improved his RBI count from 76 to 81 thanks largely to hitting in a much more potent Rangers offense.
