Player Outlook
Fernando Tatis sat out the first 20 games of 2023 while serving the remainder of his PED suspension, though he still set a career high with 141 games played after missing the entirety of 2022 with shoulder and wrist injuries in addition to the suspension. The 25-year-old finished the first half with 16 homers, 14 steals and an .871 OPS, but he hit just .225 with nine homers and 15 steals in 71 contests after the All-Star break. It was still a productive season overall, but his above-average 113 wRC+ is a far cry from the elite 154 figure he posted across his first three big-league campaigns. The encouraging news is that Tatis was able to stay healthy in 2023, and he started in all but two games following the suspension. He also made a seamless transition to having right field be his primary position, and he led the league with 29 defensive runs saved. Tatis is a strong rebound candidate for 2024 following a down second half, though it may be optimistic to expect him to regain his 2019-21 form, when he was arguably the best hitter in MLB.

The slugger was a frequent first-round pick in fantasy drafts this season largely due to his ability to contribute both power and speed, so his managers were no doubt pleased to see him attempt (and successfully nab) his first steal of the campaign Tuesday. Tatis averaged 27 stolen bases over the previous two seasons and has an excellent 82.3 percent success rate on 99 theft attempts over the course of his career so far.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Expected to stay in right field

Padres manager Mike Shildt said last week that Tatis is "strongly penciled in to play right field," Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The skipper noted that things can eventually change, but he has no expectation at this juncture that Tatis will play a position other than right field. Tatis has been mentioned previously as a possibility in center field and seemingly has the athleticism to do it, but the 25-year-old has indicated a preference to remain in right, and it looks like his wish will be granted. Also worth noting is that, with the dimensions at Petco Park, right field is a more difficult spot to play there than it is at most other venues.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Staying in right field preferred

The Padres' preference is to keep Tatis in right field next season rather than moving him to center field, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. San Diego hasn't ruled out shifting Tatis to center, depending on how or if it is able to address the position this offseason. The Padres would like to keep him in right, though, and that's also Tatis' preference, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Tatis was the National League's Platinum Glove winner in right field in 2023, and, given the dimensions in right at Petco Park, it's arguably as important or even more so of a position than center field in the Padres' case.
