Martinez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks. The 36-year-old DH came up big for the Mets, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning by crushing the first pitch he saw from Ryan Thompson to straightaway center field. Martinez is settling into a groove, slashing .279/.323/.508 over his last 15 games with five doubles, three homers and nine RBI, but his 36.9 percent strikeout rate during that time is still worrisome.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Sitting down for nightcap
Martinez isn't in the Mets' lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. After a 1-for-4 effort in Game 1, Martinez will get a breather to conclude Tuesday's activities. DJ Stewart will instead get the nod as New York's DH and bat fourth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Clubs third homer
Martinez went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Giants. The veteran DH also struck out three times, as he continues to lock in his timing at the plate following a delayed start to the season. Through 25 games as a Met, Martinez is slashing .289/.326/.456 with three homers and 10 RBI. The home run was Martinez's third from May 11 through Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Returns to lineup Monday
Martinez (illness) will start at designated hitter and bat cleanup in Monday's game in Cleveland. Martinez sat out Sunday's contest due to flu-like symptoms but is feeling well enough to give it a go in this one. The veteran DH has slashed .315/.359/.466 with two home runs in 21 games to begin his tenure with the Mets.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Battling flu-like symptoms
Martinez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Miami due to flu-like symptoms, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. It turns out Martinez is under the weather, as an illness is reportedly sweeping through the Mets' clubhouse. It's uncertain whether he's available off the bench. Brandon Nimmo will serve as the designated hitter against righty Sixto Sanchez.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Resting up Sunday
Martinez is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. The 36-year-old will get a breather in the series finale as Brandon Nimmo slots in as the designated hitter against right-hander Sixto Sanchez. Martinez seems to be finding his power stroke finally after joining the team late in spring training; he has five extra-base hits -- including two homers -- in his last eight games.... See More ... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Swats second homer
Martinez went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies. Martinez went deep in the eighth inning, launching a 403-foot solo shot off Spencer Turnbull. It was the veteran slugger's second long ball of the campaign, both of which have come over his past five games. Martinez is batting .350 (7-for-20) with four RBI over that stretch.... See More ... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Denies combined no-hit bid
Martinez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday in a loss to Atlanta. Three Atlanta pitchers combined to no-hit New York over 8.2 innings before Martinez slugged a solo shot off Raisel Iglesias to end the bid at history. The long ball was Martinez's first as a Met in his 48th plate appearance. Though his power didn't emerge until Saturday, Martinez has put up a steady .267/.313/.378 slash line through 14 games.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Out of Sunday's lineup
Martinez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay. Manager Carlos Mendoza will continue the trend of sitting Martinez for the series finale, which is now the case for the third straight series since the veteran slugger made his season debut April 26. DJ Stewart will bat fifth as the designated hitter Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Absent from lineup
Martinez is out of the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Cubs. Martinez has been given one day off in each of his first two series since joining the Mets as the club eases him back into action. That plan could continue for a bit longer before he assumes everyday duties at designated hitter. DJ Stewart will serve as the Mets' DH on Thursday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Not in Sunday's lineup
Martinez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Martinez went 3-for-8 with a double, an RBI and five strikeouts in his first two games with the Mets but will take a seat for Sunday's series finale versus St. Louis. DJ Stewart will step in as the designated hitter and bat cleanup.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Drives in run in Mets debut
Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Cardinals. He also struck out twice, but Martinez made a quick impact in his debut for the Mets, chasing Miles Mikolas from the game in the sixth inning with a run-scoring double. Martinez posted big numbers in only 113 games for the Dodgers last year, slashing .271/.321/.572 with 33 homers and 103 RBI, and once he's shaken off his rust the 36-year-old should be a potent addition to the middle of the New York batting order.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Batting fifth in Mets debut
Martinez will start at designated hitter and bat fifth in Friday's game against the Cardinals. It will be Martinez's Mets and season debut after he was sent to the minors for a while following a late-March signing. The 36-year-old will be given extra days off in the early going as he gets his feet under him, but Martinez will eventually be the team's everyday DH. He slashed .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs for the Dodgers last season.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Officially added to roster
The Mets recalled Martinez from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. Martinez had his Mets debut delayed a bit by a minor back issue, but he's ready to go now following five tune-up games in the minors. The 36-year-old went 6-for-19 with two doubles and a 2:2 K:BB in those contests. Manager Carlos Mendoza has said Martinez will not play every day right away, as the club plans to ease him into things as he faces major-league pitching for the first time since last October. Eventually, he will be the team's everyday designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Will be eased into lineup
Martinez (back) won't play every day to begin his tenure with the Mets, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. "We're not going to DH him every day," manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday. "He's going to need some days [off]. I'll sit down with him to put together a game plan because he's important. He's too valuable for this team, and we've got to take care of him." Martinez is expected to make his debut for the Mets on Friday and hit fifth behind Pete Alonso, but the 36-year-old's workload for the first week or two could be a bit less than what patient fantasy investors were hoping for.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Season debut expected Friday
Martinez (back) is on track to be added to the Mets' 26-man active roster ahead of Friday's game versus the Cardinals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Martinez is slated to play what is expected to be a final game with Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. As long as he comes out of it with no issues, he should serve as the Mets' designated hitter Friday. Martinez went to the minors to knock off some rust after signing with the Mets late in spring training and had to take a break from game action briefly due to a minor back problem, but he's healthy now and is nearing his 2024 debut with the big club. According to a Mike Puma of the New York Post, manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that he plans to slot Martinez directly behind cleanup batter Pete Alonso as the Mets' No. 5 hitter once he's activated.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Could return Friday
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday that Martinez (back) could join the big club as soon as Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The veteran slugger is scheduled to play with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday and Wednesday, which could be the final hurdle before being cleared for his Mets debut. Martinez played in two minor-league games in early April before the back issue surfaced, but he's just about MLB ready after receiving an injection and ramping his baseball work back up over the past couple weeks.... Mets' J.D. Martinez: Unlikely to go on road trip
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that it's "very unlikely" Martinez (back) will join the team on their upcoming road trip, which begins Friday in Los Angeles and runs through April 24 in San Francisco, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Based on Mendoza's comments, Martinez won't be ready to make his Mets debut until April 26, at the earliest. Martinez injured his back earlier this month while playing for Single-A St. Lucie, with whom he reported to for the start of the season after he wasn't available for spring training due to his late signing. He had been slated to begin swinging a bat Monday and is expected to resume playing in minor-league games later this week.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Set to resume swinging bat
Martinez (back) is expected to begin swinging a bat again Monday, and he should resume his minor-league assignment later this week, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. The veteran designated hitter hasn't played for Single-A St. Lucie since April 6 due to back tightness, and he received an injection Tuesday to speed his recovery. Assuming he gets back into the St. Lucie lineup this week, Martinez could be in line to make his Mets debut before the end of the month.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' J.D. Martinez: Gets injection in back
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Martinez is dealing with tightness in his lower back and received an injection for the injury, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Mendoza added that Martinez will be sidelined for up to five days, and he'll continue to ramp up his progress in the minors before joining the team. Martinez played two games at Single-A St. Lucie this past weekend and went 1-for-8 with two walks. He hasn't participated in baseball activities since then due to the back issues.... See More ...
